2011 Culver City Car Show...

Hey guys,
I went to the annual Culver City Car Show today. There weren't any slicks but there were lots of other cool cars. Here's a link: 2011 Culver City Car Show | Facebook

It's a public facebook link and you don't have to join facebook to see the pics. Enjoy!

Thanks guys. Glad you like the pics. There was one 69 F100 Ranger shortbed that I didn't get a pic of this year. It's red with a white top with a 390. I see it around West LA all the time and the guy keeps it really nice but there were too many people blocking the shot when I passed by it today. Maybe next year we can get a couple of slicks to represent us in this show. It's a pretty nice show.

Thanks for posting these pics, gave my memory a workout.

What a face = 1960 Plymouth.

The Hudson Hornet is a 1951.

The Chevy Ragtop in the next pic is a 1951, '52's have 5 grille teeth.

Killer hubcaps, black/gold Pontiac Catalina is a 1953.

The red Chevy ragtop is a 1948, as is the Fleetline in the following pic. '48's have a center vertical grille bar, '47's do not.

The Henry J is a 1952, has a decklid. 1951's do not, 1953's have different taillamps.

Patina'd Mercury is a 1951.

"Advanced Design" Chevy Pickup is a 1951/53, has vent windows. 1947/50's have none. 1954's have a different grille, one piece w/shield.

Famous Buick portholes is a 1949 Rivera, which was the 1st hardtop ever made.

The 1946 Ford woodie could be an early 1947, the only dif is the dash gauges.

The Avanti is not a Studebaker, it's a 1965/69 Avanti II made by Newman & Altman.

The 'Cuban' Pontiac is a 1950.

The orange/white Chevy Bel Air is a 1952, '53's have more massive bodies.

What a face = 1960 Plymouth.Didn't Ward Cleaver drive one of these??

The Hudson Hornet is a 1951.I guess I should have known this from the movie, "Cars"...

The Chevy Ragtop in the next pic is a 1951, '52's have 5 grille teeth. You are right. I thought they didn't change the taillights until 52 but was wrong. Since the headlights were frenched I also thought maybe they had smoothed the grill too. My bad.

Killer hubcaps, black/gold Pontiac Catalina is a 1953.You are correct. 1953 Pontiac Catalina Chieftain photo - Ken Leonard photos at pbase.com

The red Chevy ragtop is a 1948, as is the Fleetline in the following pic. '48's have a center vertical grille bar, '47's do not.I've never bothered to learn the subtle differences on the 46-48 Chevies for some reason. Guess I was never really into them. Thanks for pointing that out.

The Henry J is a 1952, has a decklid. 1951's do not, 1953's have different taillamps. According to this link it has a '51 grill...The 1951 Henry J was introduced at a Chicago showing in early 1950 but was not officially on sale till Sept 28, 1950 and they make no mention of the decklid

Patina'd Mercury is a 1951.49-51 is always hard to tell because you never see them with the original grill.

"Advanced Design" Chevy Pickup is a 1951/53, has vent windows. 1947/50's have none. 1954's have a different grille, one piece w/shield.I definitely know the '54 grill but as for the prior years, I never really liked them until people started streetrodding them.

Famous Buick portholes is a 1949 Rivera, which was the 1st hardtop ever made.Yes, this is a 49 Buick Roadmaster with "Riviera hardtop styling and VentiPorts" HowStuffWorks "1948 and 1949 Buick Roadmaster"

The 1946 Ford woodie could be an early 1947, the only dif is the dash gauges.Again, '46-48 Fords all look basically the same to me. Would be fun to see them side by side and figure out the differences.

The Avanti is not a Studebaker, it's a 1965/69 Avanti II made by Newman & Altman. You are correct. The '63-'64 were from Studebaker. This one is clearly marked "Avanti II"

The 'Cuban' Pontiac is a 1950.You are correct here, too. A Picture Review of the Pontiac from 1950 to 1959

The orange/white Chevy Bel Air is a 1952, '53's have more massive bodies.
The "53" was a typo. I meant to type '52. It's a bad pic. I should have deleted it!

Hey Bill, thanks for the corrections! Some of this stuff I know, some of it I've never known and some of it just gets confusing when they start customizing. I should have spent more time looking at the info sheets but was having too much fun snapping pics and gawking...
I'm glad your memory got a good workout. It's good to keep all those synapses firing!

1951 Henry J's did not have a decklid, to store items in the trunk, it was necessary to access it from the back seat.

When Henry J. Kaiser decided to make the Henry J, his partner Joseph Frazer said it wouldn't sell worth a damn, also said it would never recoup its startup costs. This PO'd Kaiser, was one a the reasons why Frazer (who was right) left the company. Sears also marketed the Henry J in 1952/53, calling it the Allstate. Didn't sell worth a hoot, only 1,002 were sold. I've seen exactly one...in a junkyard.
----------------------------------------------
1951 Merc's have "frenched" taillamps, as do Lincoln Cosmopolitans and 'baby' Lincoln's (same body as the Merc, same front end as a Cosmo).

The reason for the baby Lincoln...was: The 1949 Mercury was originally supposed to be the 1949 Ford! The baby Lincoln was the Mercury.

When 'The Deuce' looked at the styling mockups in 1947, he deemed the "1949 Ford" to be too massive, so an all new 1949 Ford was designed/styled...in a month.

Ford did the engineering, Dick Caleal was hired to do the styling (in his off hours, since he worked for Raymond Loewy-who had the Studebaker contract). Caleal baked the clay model in his wifes oven.

The only change FoMoCo made in Caleal's design was to change the taillamps from vertical to horizontal. When Loewy discovered what Caleal had done, he fired him.

Loewy's stylists styled the 1939 Studebaker Champion, 1947 Studebakers (wags said: "Which way is it going?"), 1953 Studebakers and...the Avanti.

Loewy hired the best stylists, cuz he couldn't draw a single line(!), but had a good 'eye.'
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1946 Fords except woodies: Have a moulding on the decklid that '47's do not. Otherwise are the same as early 1947 except for the gauges.

1946 early 1947 Ford woodies are basically the same, only the face of the gauges is different.

All 1946, early 1947 Fords have rectangular parking lamps inboard of the headlamps. Late 1947's, 1948's have round parking lamps below the headlamps.

Late 1947 Fords: The grilles have painted blue lines in their horizontal bars (1946/early 1947's are red). The hood ornament is different, same one was used in 1948.

The late 1947 grille center moulding has Ford outlined in blue. 1946/early 1947, it's red.

1948: The center emblem is different than late 1947, the horizontal bars are smooth as are the side mouldings. 1946/1947 side mouldings are fluted.

Hood emblem (below the hood ornament): 1946/early 1947 is the same, late 1947/1948 is different. 1946/47's have a locking steering column, 1948's do not.

1946, 1947 & 1948: The dash and window crank ***** are different colors, but what years are different, I cannot recall.

Hey 37FordGuy!

My truck is getting really close to being operational again (almost done with power brake/disc brake/power steering installation). It still won't be pretty for a while but at least it will run again!

Definitely be sure to post about these local shows when they pop up.

Hey Nonoodlez! That's good news. You'll love that conversion.
The F100 Western Nationals are coming up in June. Hope to see you there.
