I can't believe you guys are having so many issues doing this swap without help, I'm not a big guy or anything, but I did both in under 5 minutes myself just holding it up with one hand...
yeah me too, hatch is heavier than I thought but its not ridiculous. I was able to use one hand.

I opted for the extra 'safety' of using a painter's extension pole as a prop rod. Worked great, but you're right -- if you're careful, you don't really need anything.
Why can't they put "dino" oil in them, when it gets really cold the
"dino" oil gets thicker and will work better...
Sort of like why don't they put the soda where they store the
silverware on the airlines? Silverware is ice cold, soda not so much.
so far the ones the posted referred me to in this thread, the super tall ones, have had no problems lifting my hatch one handed, we have had temps get down to 12 degrees (so cold my diesel didn't want to start), but the hatch struts were working fine.
I'm sure their performance will slowly degrade over time. but for now they work great even in the cold.

I used my head, literally. Holding it up with the hatch propped on my head.
Then my son walked by and I used my head, figuratively. I had him hold it for me!
Just did mine and am so happy i found this thread before I bought new lift supports. They have a discount code if you go to their facebook page.
I looked all over their Facebook page. Could you give the discount code or direct me to it? Obviously they must be fine with it being disseminated if it is on Facebook.
I would think your wife would be ok. Our X is lifted about 2" or so (V & B-Mod) and my wife is 5' 6" and she can reach the hatch, but barely. If she can't you could add a little pull rope.
