1987 Ford F250 project

Hey guys, I'm doing restoration project on my truck, Blue Moon. It was my father's truck that he bought new in April 1987 to November 2011.It only has 109,400 miles. He gave it to me because he knows I need supercab and loves the 460. My regular cab shortbed is too small for me (have 2 babies). He bought 2006 Ford F250 V10 Triton supercab 8ft bed in December 2005 but he still use his 1987 for winter driving (he doesn't want salts on his new truck) So finally I got his '87.

Since it has few parts that are rusted. Namely supercab corner on the bottom, the bed wheel well, tailgate, and the passenger door on the bottom.. Today, I went to my town junkyard and bam! I found a nice 1992 Ford F150 that has been in accident (front end). The bed and tailgate are unbelievable awesome condition! I looked everywhere and it has no rust at all! So I negotiated with the guy and got the bed/tailgate for $250.00! I also want rear bumper too so I got it for $20! I'm gonna paint it blue to match the truck. I also plan to paint under the bed to keep it rust free and get rhino liner in spring. When I pull it out tomorrow, I'm gonna see how the gas tank condition. If it's good shape, I'll buy the gas tank too.

I saw 1991 Ford F250 and that truck has tach, my '87 doesn't have tach. I want to have tach. So my question is, can I able to swap cluster? Will tach works or ??? And if I do get this cluster, can I able to roll it to match my '87 mileage?

The supercab on the bottom corner near the bed (both side) has a rust. Should I cut it out and replaced with metal (I found good condition supercab truck at junkyard and cut that panel off for my'87) or fiberglass it?

I will add pictures tomorrow so everyone here can see my projects. Thanks guys!

sounds great man. where's the pics? it's a cardinal sin to post about a truck you just got or work you just did and not post pics. haha. we're interested to read about the progress on it.

Welding metal is always better because it's structural.
(The rear cab mount is partially supported by the corners)

I have an '89 Tach cluster in my '87 460.
There were some idiot lights and wires to switch, but it's fully functional.
If you have it apart there are ways to roll the numbers back.
(better info in the 80--86 forum)

Here are my albums, will add more as i work on project. some was from last year when i took off bed to repair gas leak (by fuel pump). The tailgate was new, i just got it yesterday. i already strip it down to get it ready for paint. I'm picking up the bed on saturday so will get new pix on that. I'm going back to junkyard now and get 1991 ford f250 cluster off (one with tach) and install it on my '87. any comments or feedback are welcome.

that's not a bad truck there. that cancer over the wheel wells is really common as is the cab corners but it sure is straight. can't wait to see how it turns out.

Here the update- I got the cluster off the 1991 Ford and swap it. Everything works! However can anyone chime in, I'm deaf and I don't really hear engine/transmission that well, I was wondering if 45mph at 3k rpm sound right for F250 7.5L 460 4 speed manual with 3.55 rear end?

I also got light dimmer, mine broke, only stay bright all the time. Now replaced it, finally able to adjust light brights from low to bright.

Took few pics. Will post them later.

hmmm. I think my '90 F250 460/C6 and 3.55 runs about 3K at 70MPH assuming the speedo is correct. it's been about 2 1/2 weeks since I drove it so it's hard to recall.

My tach doesn't work properly now.. it spin wildly sometimes. even when i turn heat on, it goes up to 6k rpm. i notice after like 20 mins of driving it goes back to normal rpm of 2000-2500k on 50-55 mph. any suggestion??

and i have question, the bed i took off 1992, the supercab truck is also a great shape comparing to mine. mine has rust on bottom of cab corners (both side) and big hole on floor driver side, about 5 inches diameter. Will the 1992 cab fit my 1987? I want to keep '87 interior in '92 with slant window in back seat. Can i able to bolt it up without any major mod?

I'm pretty sure '80-97 used basically the same cab. the only difference I know of is the back side windows in the supercabs so it shouldn't be a problem to swap it.

keep in mind that the VIN to the truck is in the cab. I'm not sure what issues you'll run into with the DMV because of this but you'll want to check that out.

'92 will fit.

User 'Sycostang67' has some good posts about putting later bodystyle cabs on this era chassis.

You might want to search for some of his threads.

Hey guys I have decided to buy 1992 Ford F150 truck cab because my '87 has too much rust (cab corner on both side and floor rot). The member said previously it will fit. However I have one question, the side windows on '92 is different from '80-'91. I would like to keep the 80s side window slant. Is it possible to do swap or any major mod? And what the fair price for truck cab? Gonna go over there and see what their asking price.

Can you just swap the '87 doors into the '92 cab?
Or is the bottom of the doors shot too?
'cause the vent window style doors will fit into --> '96 IIRC.

Doors will fit but you need the later "clipped" vent windows to clear the later dash. The later vent assemblies fit right into the older doors.

86 and earlier had thinner vent windows and wider door glass. 87-96/97 should be the same.
