Now, you can help Rob here with *his* similar situation.

What did you ultimately find the problems to be?

It was a combination of things really. When I rebuilt the carb the first time, I'm not sure exactly what happened, but it was hemorrhaging gas into the manifold. So, I took it down and rebuilt it again. This time I guess I got it right and the mixture was good. I think I still have some tweaking to do with the mixture needles but it's better. Second, I had to make sure I had good vacuum all around. I was able to pick up a vacuum tester at O'Reilly Auto Parts for $40 and a compression tester at Sturdevants for $24. Both those came in very handy when troubleshooting. Found my compression in the cylinders to be aroun 150psi and after the fuel mixture was set my vacuum was at 17Hb. Lastly I figured that that plugs had to be in pretty bad shape after all the gas was poured over them. I got a new set of NGK plugs. Made sure the gapping was good and put them in. Runs like a top now. I would say to Rob that he needs to make sure that hissing sound he's hearing isn't a bad manifold gasket. One trick I did hear about on the forum and other places; if you do think you've got a manifold leak is to spray some starting fluid around the edge of the manifold. If the engine smooths out you have a leak. Unfortunately the only way to fix that is to take the manifold off and redo the gaskets. I didn't have this particular problem, but a hissing noise isn't ever good. Hope this helps Rob.
