Hey lavatan, I did the same thing on my carb, hehe.. Glad you figured it out. Once you get your carb set where it will idle, we can attack the timing issue, if that is still a problem.

As for the carb, I was doing a completely newb move. I was adjusting the floats up instead of down. This is what was causing the flooding issue. D'oh!!!

I'm going to drain the bowls, remove the carb and adjust the floats...
Kinda hard to do a wet adjustment when you can't get the truck to idle, isn't it?

Tell me about it. Anyway. Got the carb off and the gasket tore. It was soaked in fuel. So I gotta get a new one before going forward. *sigh* oh well. The bowls were way off and I adjusted the needle to 1 1/2 turns out. Hope that gets it. I'll let you know tomorrow.

Quick question kind of off topic. The PCV connection on the carb; can that be connected to the elbow in the oil filter cap?

Many come from the factory that way; how is yours hooked up right now?

The PCV systems sucks out blow-by gases, and that volume is replaced by filtered air (which is allowed in from a different connection).

That answers that question. I'll get a new PCV valve and grommet. Anafiel, I certainly hope not. That would so not make my day! I'll get back to you guys tomorrow.

Well, I adjusted the floats and the mixture screws. It seems to want to idle a little longer but still is very lopey (is that a word). It will idle like that for about 2 minutes and then die. I have been getting closer. I'm going to wait until this Sunday when my dad can help me adjust the carb while the truck is "running" to see if we can get it to idle more smoothly.

I was wrong about the cam. It is an RV cam. Comp Cams 34-223-4 with matching springs (926-16) and lifters (832-16). I also noticed that it's leaking oil out the back. Hope it's not the rear main seal....

Well, my dad was over to take a look and we determined that the carb is not allowing a good mix of gas/oxygen. He attempted to tune the carb while the truck was running and we could not get any improvement at all. I think I'll buy a new carb and see what happens. I think I'll get an edelbrock this time.

I decided to opt for getting another rebuild/renew kit and see if a gasket had a minor tear or something else causing the flooding. If this doesn't work then I will end up buying a new carb.

Holley carbs will warp the base plate , and it will act as a big vacuum leak ! some holleys came with 4 screws on the base and 6 holes for screws if i remember right ! if yours has only 4 screws in the base then put the 2 missing one in and it should help !

Thanks for the info cj. There are 6 holes and 6 screws. They are all in place. After the rebuild tonight I am going to vacuum test the manifold. Hope there's no leak. How many inches should I be looking for on this size engine with a slightly better than stock cam?

They also warp the metering blocks.
