That code would not be correct. The code should only have four digits. Assuming the actual code is P0401, that code actually means insufficient EGR flow was detected. Per the factory service manual, the following could be likely causes for this code:
It's relatively common for the DPFE sensors to fail on this era of Ford, you might start there once you confirm the hoses to it are fine.
-Rod
- Vacuum supply
- EGR valve stuck closed
- EGR valve leaks vacuum
- EGR flow path restricted
- EGRVR circuit shorted to PWR
- VREF open to D.P.F. EGR sensor
- D.P.F. EGR sensor downstream hose off or plugged
- EGRVR circuit open to PCM
- VPWR open to EGRVR solenoid
- D.P.F. EGR sensor hoses both off
- D.P.F. EGR sensor hoses reversed
- Damaged EGR orifice tube
- Damaged EGRVR solenoid
- Damaged PCM

I don't know for sure where it's at on the V6. If you were to look at the exhaust tube for the EGR valve there will be two small ports off the tube with rubber hoses connected to the ports. Both of these rubber hoses will connect to the DPFE sensor. It will be a box (either aluminum or plastic) that is approximately 3 inches by 2 inches by 3/4 inch and, in addition to two rubber hoses, also have a 3-wire connector connected to it. You may be able to find a photo of it on one of the parts store websites. It may be listed as an "EGR Pressure" sensor.

It's up to the store on whether or not they will reset the code. It seems in states where there are annual vehicle inspections the stores tend to be more reluctant to reset diagnostic codes.
Also, be aware that the hoses are different sizes, but often not so different that they cannot be connected backwards. You'll want to make sure you have the hoses going to the right nipples on the DPFE.
