Well I'm having an issue with a 94 IDI turbo 7.3 engine. Several oil leaks and someone damaged the oil pan and tried to fix it wil JB weld. Will an non turbo 7.3 pan fit the the IDI turbo motor? This is a customer of mine as well as a friend and it's been a pain to say the least. I had to put dye in it just to see where all the oil was coming from. It was a frigging mess to say the least.
agreed, the 6.9l and n/a 7.3l will both fit. but all the leaking might not come from the pan alone. theres a back plate and a front plate that can both leak and drip around the pan so it looks like its coming from that gasket.

Thanks guys. Not the gasket but the pan. It's got JB weld on the dipstick tube mount and several other places. I'm an ASE certified Tech but have never seen this kind of crap. It's got a small leak on the lift pump and I thought the turbo pressure seal was leaking until I put the dye in it. Drove it down the road not even a mile and lost 2 quarts.
This thing has driven me nuts for the last week trying to pinpoint the leak. I replaced the rear main seal because my friend said it was the issue, but now I know it isn't.
WOW!! 2 Quarts of oil in less than a mile?! I thought mine was bad and it looses oil @ 2 quarts/3000-4000 miles. Any oil pan from these IDI engines will bolt right up, the 7.3 is a bored out 6.9. So the parts are very interchangable.
After reading your second post, are you sure you are working on an IDI? 94 was the year Ford came out with the Powerstroke, in mid model year. The IDI dipstick mounts threw the block, and the Stroke's mounts threw the pan. If it is a Stroke engine the IDI oil pan will not fit. The easiest way to tell the difference in the engines, the IDI will have steel lines running from a pump mounted in the front of the engine running to the injectors, while the Stroke will not.
actuay the easiest way to tell is if the oil fill is front and center it's a 7.3l idi, if it's on te valve cover it's powerstroke. I know he's a mecanic but for any noob I just ask that and know what I'm getting

OMG! You may have just answered the oil leak issue. You guys rock, thanks!
I'm not a Ford tech so if it doesn't use gas I have to figure it out. Oil fill is on the passeger side and dipstick tube is on the drivers side mounted in the pan. Truck was built in 4/94 and after searching through Mitchellondemand it didn't make one bit of sense what I was seeing.
I'm gonna bet some one though it was an IDI engine and got a pan cheap to replace a damaged one, and it's the wrong pan. This makes so much sense now. Gonna climb under the dang thing and take another look. Are there any other ways to identify the engine so I can make sure what in this truck?

I had to re-read this again. I'm gonna take a pic of the engines top so maybe someone can help me figure out what it is. Since it was built in 4/94 and there are no exposed injectors it may be the power stroke but like I said, I'm not used to working on diesel trucks especially Ford. It does have an oil cooler on the drivers side like the old IDI engines that were NA and I've had to fix a leaking oil cooler before. Looks just like the one I worked on years ago.

That's a powerstroke, I've seen a couple oil pans rust through on them. One was about 5 years ago and I "fixed" it with JB weld. It's still holding!
The other one was about a year ago and the JB's still holding on that one also.
If it helps here is a picture of my 1993 IDI . If the one your working on is a PSD it will be very different If it is the IDI with a turbo it will be the same except for the turbo:
The PSD came out about the middle of 1994 so it could easily be either one
