Truck sounds like a locomotive? (Not an april fools joke)

I've got a 2011 F350 SD Diesel Chipped w/ an AFE Stage 2 intake

Ran into an issue recently on my way back from a road trip that I've had happen intermittently in the past.

Was travelling up a hill very light on the throttle and the intake started to make a noise almost like an old locomotive train (chug chug chug chug) and the truck bucked with each chug and it continued to do this until I gave it about ~15% more throttle.

I'm not sure if it was just the wastegate flapping or what. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Also, on an unrelated note, my truck refuses to switch between the panel vents, defrost and floor. It's currently stuck on panel. Anyone else have this silly issue?

My wife's '88 Caddy used to not switch from defrost to panel and vice versa. It would also transfer on it's own when you went WOT. And sometimes when the cruise was on and you would come to hill, the cruise would drop out. Came to be a vacuum issue. I don't kno if these new trucks still use vacuum controls or not.

Yeah, I'm not sure if on the new truck it's electronically activated or still vacuum. I've looked and can't find any obvious vacuum leaks and I took it to the dealership for a day and they couldn't figure it out *sigh*

I believe your HVAC symptom may point to the cause of your chugging.

To my understanding these engines use vacuum pressure for some of the engine controls, such as EGR valve. If you have a vacuum leak somewhere or a non-functioning vacuum pump it would cause your truck to not run right.

I'd take it to the dealer and explain what it's doing, they should be able to troubleshoot better than we can.

Is the dealer OK with this and still doing the repairs under warranty?

Hope you get this resolved. I would be leaning on the vacuum issue idea.

My truck has the same problem. The hvac system is stuck on panel only. I thought i was the only one with that problem. Its really bad on those mornings when there is a lot of ice and snow on the windshield. My truck runs great though so i think it is a seperate issue. I havn't had a chance to get it back to the dealer yet. Craig
