weird fuel leak on 7.3
I have a 96 f-350 that is leaking fuel out of the inspection pan on the trans. It is not coming from anything on top of engine, cannot see anything on outside of engine or trans at all. Looked in the intake galley and it's dry as a bone! Looked at back of heads and nothing! My question is ... is there anything on the engine block behind flywheel that could be leaking ? any info would be great !

It's gotta be leaking from up top somewhere and running down the back of the block then dripping out the inspection cover. I am sure someone else will be in here shortly that can give you more detailed instructions to try. Did you by chance check whether the banjo bolt is tight? You'll need a 1 1/4" open end wrench to check it, but mine had a similar leak and it turned out to just be that the banjo bolt was a little loose.

Better take another look...Like Nate suggests, your leak is highly likely to originate from the top end of the engine. Get a BRIGHT flshlight/droplight and find it.
The outlet at the valley routes all the fuel down the back of the block, on the pass side and the drip is visible right where you described it.
Many of have had the same thought but eventually found the source of the leak; those links will guide you to a drip free parking spot.

yup they normally start to leak in the "Valley of Death" and drip down the back right (passenger) side of the block. You should clean all the grime and cat hair out of the valley and re-inspect for fuel. Let us know what you find and we will hellp you patch it up. How many miles are on it? Have you ever had the fuel pump go out? The pump will start to leak out of the weep holes. What is your fuel pressure at the FPR?
If you check it with a tire gage, make sure it goes up to at least 60 psi.
Good luck!

I had a leak last year and it was a bad pump. I changed the pump all lines, clamps and washers on banjo bolt. Engine was soaked up top puddes in every indent before I fixed this stuff. Now everthing is dry evertime I check it , there is no fuel what so ever by the drain hole in the corner. I cleaned the galley out very well so I can see if anything is dripping. But you climb under truck and it's dripping out of cover below, starter is soaked also and it's spraying onto trans pan. It's like it's coming from inside of bell housing because just the nose of the starter is wet. The out side of the bell housing is dry. I'll ck out these other post anyway! Thanks

A leaking fuel pump is very hard to see. There is a weep hole on the bottom of it that points to the right side and it's a real fine pulsating stream that is impossible to see with just a flashlight. You need a good light an stick an inspection mirror down there near the right side base of the pump. Or just stick a mirror down there and see if it comes up wet while it's running.

Well I think I found it ! The filter restriction sensor was dripping on the valve cover and running back and dripping on bellhousing! I just pulled it and plugged it. It was leaking were the plastic end is mated into the brass. Had to look before work this morning with it running because it only leaks when it's cold. Thanks for all the useful info everyone !!!

fuel leaking in valley below banjo fitting 1997 7.3 diesel
My 1997 f250 was leaking fuel, puddled under the banjo fitting in the engine valley,, ford dealer replaced the banjo fitting, still leaked.
he then replaced the three hoses from the fuel pump to the water seperator housing, still leaked,
finnally we found a pin hole in the bottom of the water seperator housing.
I took the old one home and cleaned it out and there are several dipples
in the bottom of the housing, these are casting flaws. I touch the pin hole
with a screw driver and now the hole is almost 1/8 of an inch! the only
thing that keep this from being a disaster and possible engine fire, was
all the dirt and crud in the bottom.
I wonder how many other diesels are out there with the same kind of
casting flaw?
