Fuel tank, Lg. Rear

I need an option for a 2000-2002 rear tank beside a new Ford tank ($850) or relining my old one ($450). I am half temped to just weld up a stainless one. Even for the cost of the Moyers relined (lifetime warrentee) I could weld one up. Any thoughts? I am half considering welding up one out of just being ticked that they are charging sooo much for either option. Especially the relining, seems they may be charging extra just 'cause they can. Seems new tanks are NOT available except from Ford, WHAT gives?

Thanks Ironwood

If I'm not mistaken shouldn't you have a plastic tank?? How about your local salvage yard??

I have three trucks, 2000 F550 4x4 gasser (no rear tank) bought one at salvage yard to go with front steel tank along frame. Salvage tank came off a SD F450 7.3 CC 2x4, heavy steel, not same as my other tank, thicker, no flanges. Nice tank.

2000 F-550 4x2 7.3 w/ rear tank, steel, with side flange, seems thinner than one above.

2002 F-350 CC 4x4 (family tirpper truck), I want to add a 35 gallon side tank along frame, bought here on FTE from guy, plastic. The rear tank on this truck (metal, thinner and flanged) just started leaking. I am going to pull the 8' stake body and do both tanks (install plastic side tank, and put heavier steel scrap yard tank from first paragraph). So I will still need to replace or fix the leaking one from this truck for the F550 gasser later. I got to thinking about the heavy guage steel one, I have good fabrication skills, plasma cutter, mig welder. It looks totally doable, not real funky design, looks like some flat plate and simple design. I am just pissed new tanks and the relining cost so much. I could reuse the portals from the rusted one. LEt me say I would use this fabricated tank on a diesel not a gasser (stakes are higher with volatility of gasoline) Heck, may even make it out of stainless plate.

So only one is plastic, side tank for the F-350 bought from guy here on FTE.

Any thoughts? Ironwood

Ahh, OK. I assumed you had a F-250 or F-350. Here's a bump for you for the 450-550 crowd but I can steer you to a good fella here Cory, his screen name here is Ziggy, he's done some conversions on tanks, excursion and pickups but maybe he could offer you some info, good luck.

Thanks, let's see if he shows.

Did the F-250 have plastic rear tank? How big? perhaps that would be an option. Certainly more common for a salvage yard find. I have no problem w/ plastic, skid plates are there and if not easy to fab.
