Cost of a Decent F-100

I love these trucks and im thinking of doing one for a project this summer but dont know allot about them so what im wondering is how much should i expect to spend on building one thats street legal and i could take to the track every once and awhile for fun. minus paint and body work. also what is a good trans and engine combo for these trucks.

thanks, Zach

C'mon dude... there are too many variables to guestimate a cost... geographic location, 2WD or 4WD, trim level, shortbed vs long bed, engine/tranny combo, accessory options, etc.

Personally, I like the 302/C4 2WD shortbeds and would gladly pay up to $2,000 based on my definition of "decent".

What are you looking for and what is your definition of "decent"?????

302's are a dime a dozen. That would be a good choice as parts are cheaper. Step up to a 429 or 460 and wow. You could watch the money fly. Hopefully in april or may mine will go faster with the west coast mirrors Hio. Lol

I agree with Bullit...........too many variables here...........could range from "will deliver to get it out of my yard" to $15,000 to $25,000............

I wouldn't be looking at a full size truck, of any brand, for better fuel economy than a Jeep. I used to have a Jeep Wrangler, and I'm pretty sure that my 2wd Ford F-150 is getting less mpg. Although it does cruise down the freeway great.

About the only F100 that gets even close to what some might call "decent" mileage is going to have a 300 6 in it and 2WD. And that's pushing the definition to it's limit.

As far as the money goes, I bought my '79 F-100 Custom with 300-6 and a 4-speed for $1,000. Then I drove it home 33 miles with no issues. The deals are out there.

Yep...302s were available from 73-79. A swap would be relatively easy. Order up the LMC, NPD, JBG, and DC catalogs... they are chock full of reference information and exploded diagrams.

Gas mileage.... ah, the never ending quest. My next project (70 2WD Bumpside LB) is slated to get a TKO-500 (up to 500 ft.lbs. rating) where fifth gear is a lowly 0.68 ratio. Meaning, a 4.11 rear gear would act like a 2.80 which is ideal for highway flying. I'm hoping to get at least 22 mpg... I'm still undecided on the engine though... either an FE or a 460 - both with either a FAST or Retrotek fuel injection system. Decisions, decisions, decisions.....

Not that I know of, otherwise I would "mind control" the lottery to match my numbers.
