Build your own on a Mauser 98 action, and have the strongest action available for whatever caliber you choose.

That's one of my main beefs with the 700 is that the pull weight is the only adjustable feature on the trigger and they are pretty variable in what kind of pull weight you can safely get.
I am pretty sure the accutrigger is available on all of them now. Mine doesn't happen to be an accutrigger tho. But I can adjust, creep, pull length and weight. IIRC the acutrigger has the same adjustments.

This brings up something else I have done lately. Look on gunbroker.com recently picked up a Parker hale 30-06 in really nice shape for $340 INCLUDING shipping and FFL fee's do a search for the parker hale rifles, people don't look at them cause it's not a Remington or Winchester but they are actually pretty nice rifles built on the commercial Mauser 98 action.

Is the deal they get the rifle they want or the one you get them. If he wants a Remington get him a Remington it is going to be his gun and he is going to be the one to use it not you so it needs to be what he wants not what you think he needs.

I'll say to get either the Remington or a Ruger. I have heard many a gunsmith cringe when they hear the word 'Savage' around them; but this was years ago, and things may have changed. Another brand you may check into is Weatherby, but they were expensive when I was looking years ago.

As for caliber; if this rifle is primarily for deer and antelope at 200 to 350 yards, then I prefer the .270 Winchester caliber over the .30-06. For a good all-around caliber the .30-06 is a great jack of all trades. I kind of prefer a .338 Winchester or something in the .338 to .350 caliber for elk, and the .270 for deer and antelope, especially in long shots over 200 yards. Yes, I keep two rifles, one for deer and antelope, one for elk. I also have a .223 for small varmits, like coyotes, and a .22LR just because.

We always had good luck with the 700's although we called them something different and they were tuned a little more than normal. Ruger is a nice choice too. The more stuff I get from them the better I like them.

I love the 700. I have 6 of them in different calibers. I use the Remington 300 Ultra Mag as my main shooter.

I hunt deer with a Browning BLR in 308. I have a pre 64 Model 70 in 30/06. A Rem742 in 06. I want a Savage bolt in 17hmr. I don't have many rifles. I have 25 plus shotguns & a few handguns. I like my 308 BLR. Its light, short, deadly accurate & unusual. Most people think its a 30/30. I have a Leopold Vari X3 3.5 x10x40 on it. Its all the deer rifle I need

I do not hunt but I love to shoot. Too much I think. I could be very rich in my old age, if I just didn't have the 'disease'. TOO many toys and craving more. ;o(...... I've got a collection of the old and new. MONSTERBABY, I agree that savage is pretty reliable. I even have one of the oldies. Savage 303. lever action. Incredible rifle for its time. It still is. They stopped making ammo for it a while back but I just found out there is NEW ammo being made for it. In its original cartridge size. Not made from some other one. Made me happy.

'Some' of the toys: (3) Mauser 98; Savage 111LRH; Savage 303; few Win 22's; 10 22;
223; Rem 700; M21; M24; M82A1 and a few others. ;o)

Aren't toys fun?

these are my two main hunting rifles

And yes I am fully aware one of them is NOT a high powered rifle. BUT I promise you it is just as deadly on white tails as an 06 (the auto loader is the 7mm rem mag)

My mom proved to me a rimfire will drop a deer. I laughed when she aimed at one in her garden. She dropped it in its tracks. (Note stay out of moms garden.) LOL

(gravely mom voice) I said, get off my garden.

I have a few of the Remington 700's and the most used on is the 22-250 for woodchuck removal. ... they don't chuck wood after that. A good quality scope is a must, Nikon is my glass of choice, that or Leupold.

The deal is I want him to have a rifle with a good adjustable trigger, which has not been my experience with remingtons. As his father I try to offer good adivce when the opportunity arises.
