1974 4x4 Power Assist steering swap

I did this years ago by using a steering box from a F-150. 78 and 79 bronco is the same. All I did was line it up with everything, c-clamp it to the frame and drill new holes. You will also have to get a tapered ream for the steering arm to fit. You will need to find a power steering pump and bracket for your engine. You should have either a 6 cylinder or 360 v-8. the cars had power steering on them they used the 390 engine, go salvage yard hunting.

The power assist steering system is a POS.. prone to leaks, core charges are super-high, and just a PITA. Good luck finding parts in the yards... if so, then it will likely need to be rebuilt anyways.
I HIGHLY recommend the integral PS swap from the 76-79 4x4s... and the T-style linkage. Did it to my 73 and it is a pleasure to drive. My total cost was $360...I'll post up the parts list with my costs and sources if you want see it.
Alternatively, Benchworks Steering has a kit for around $1000.

P/S pumps:
1965/77 Passenger Cars (w/o Hydroboost); 1966/77 F100/350; 1972/77 Bronco: The P/S pumps are essentially the same, have a steel reservoir.
In 1978, Ford changed the P/S pump on everything (except Econolines), has a plastic reservoir.
The P/S pressure hoses used on 1977 and earlier pumps will not work with the 1978 and newer pumps. '
1978 and later P/S pressure hoses have a straight end with an O-ring on it used in conjunction with the qwik dis-connect fitting used on 1978 and later pumps.
Most of the 1977 and earlier P/S pump mounting brackets will not work on the 1978 and newer pumps. The P/S pulley's will work on both types.

74 F100 4x4 Integral PS Swap
First, a few notes:
1. I sleeved my frame instead of simply drilling holes for the mounting bolts.
2. You can source the pressure fittings new from Jegs or Summit but I had no clue on what to get so I brought both pressure hoses to a hydraulic shop and got a custom line fabbed up.
3. The 78-79 T-style drag link and tie rod is waaay better then the Y-style found in 76-77.
4. After removing the tie rod from the donor, loosely reinstall the tie rod and measure how much "stick-out" the tie rod shank is exposed and keep a record of that measurement. You'll likely need to ream your D44s steering arm holes because the later tie rod has a thicker shank. I thought they were all the same but alas, they were not.
Here is the list (and less expensive if you can beg or borrow a reamer!):

HIO SILVER, AWAY!!... that was my battle cry after everything was hooked up, bled, and I could steer my rig with one hand AT A STANDSTILL. Ahhhhhhh.

HIO Silver, all is pretty self explanatory. The steering shaft I presume is for the column. Is there any particular part numbers for the steering gear box. Last as far as positioning of the box is it in the same area as the old box?
Thanks for all the help. I will let you know how things are going.

2. The steering box moves back nearly touching the track bar bracket. The conversion will result in the pitman arm pointing forward instead of towards the rear with the manual box.
Oh, mroe notes: You'll have to collapse the later model steering shaft so it will fit. Second, the Bronco steering shaft I used had a 3/4-36 single "D" and I had to grind a flat spot on the steering column shaft. Lastly, using a later model steering shaft will create two electrically isolated sections. Install a jumper wire across the steering shaft sleeve and at the rag joint or else the horn circuit will not ground.

I know I am asking a lot, but could you possibly snap a couple digital photos of some of this stuff, tie rod/drag link set up. Box position and steering column shaft and send them to me at pat.unger@gmail.com.
It looks like I can get most of this from Autozone, since junkyards are scarce down here, a little more money, but all is new or reman and guaranteed.
Thanks,
pat
