What to charge per mile?

Well I've been putting my truck to work lately. I figure since there are no jobs out there that I better put my current equipment to use. I've been figuring that a $1.00 a mile is as low as I can go when the high cost of fuel and wear and tear are factored in. I am also going to charge $12.00 an hour for wheel time or any general labor involved such as stacking bales. I based my cost on 10 miles per gallon due to the fact that I can be towing a heavy load or running empty for at least half of the trip. Am I "high" or within reason due to the current state of economics?

I'm a bit new to the hauling game but I find it quite enjoyable as compared to being stuck in a cubicle all day...

I have no idea how much to charge? Just doing a "T DO" in my head....
10' U-Haul = $30.00 a day + $0.59 a mile.
How much does a "Home Depot laborer" cost per hour?
Are your costs comparable....just working it out a little in my head is all.
Good luck and let us know what you come up with....You may even ask this question here:

MM,

Below is what I pulled from the IRS 2011 mileage reimbursement rate.
  • 14.0 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations
  • 19.0 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes
  • 51.0 cents per mile for business miles driven
I have a personal car that my company reimburses me for business miles. I average about 2000 miles per month. The company factors in some wear and tear, current gas prices, and insurance costs into a formula then it spits out a price per mile. It averages about .55/mile from month to month but shoud go up a bit with the gas prices rising. Anyway something to give you an idea.

As for as your driving labor/hour. I think $12.00/hr is fare maybe you can Google driver rates for labor and get soem ideas?

Mike

Thanks Mike..

Perhaps $1.00 a mile is a bit much even with our thirsty beasts? I think $12.00 an hour is fair but I am willing to back to the 80's and charge only $10.00 an hour...

I think a buck a mile may be about right....maybe even low! The U-Haul mentioned about for 60 cents a mile does NOT include fuel....ALSO, you are trying to make money, you are not a public service. You may want to find an ad in the paper for someone doing the same thing. Maybe call them and try to get a quote to haul something from point A to B and see what they say and then ask them how they come up with the price.
I would also set a minimum price too. For example, if I where moving 5 doors down ( 5 miles in 30 trips, and at $12.00 and hour for labor....I would call you for sure w/current prices above. SO for a 10 hour day I could work the dawg do do outta you and your truck for $125.00!...not bad (for me the consumer)

Yes sir, I was thinking about a minimum last night. For example I was supposed to move 500 bales of hay yesterday which would have been 180 miles or so worth of round trips. Either there wasn't enough hay or it wasn't in good enough shape for my client. I only ended up moving 200 bales within 2 trips. My original estimate was way low at $150 but I discounted it further to $85 dollars for the whole gig. I took a hit or broke even, hence my original post. I have only been my own business man a bit in the past and did ok but I'd like to better than that and be able to do it with a smile..

I haul cars and have to carry cargo and liability (100k & 500K) 12,000$ a year, if I am not getting 1.19 a mile I am loosing money. In your case, a buck a mile sounds fair.
