For those with k & N air filters

Do k & N air filters make a difference over the stock filter? Basically what im saying is should i buy one, do the mpgs improve and the power improve? Wanted to get another opinion before i spend the $$. Thanks for any input.

Before the "search mongers" get you. there is much debate over K&N filters and those like them. To get good airflow thru an oiled filter they have to be clean. when they are clean they don't filter well. to get them to filter well they need to be dirty. When they are dirty they don't breath well. Plus you are always sucking the oil that you treat hem with. My opinion is just run a good quality paper filter and keep it clean.

I have run K&N air filters in my truck since I bought it and in my Grand Cherokee for the 8 years I owned it and never had any complaints about them. I do clean it about every 6 months and allow the filter to sit out for about an hour or two before reinstalling it in the truck after oiling. Whether or not it actually does anything for gas mileage or anything I am not sure. But $40 once and regular cleaning and I am very happy.

I've been running them for years, too. Never had problem 1. Just follow the directions and don't over-oil them. Difficulty breathing when oiled? LMAO.

My bad! I think they filter fine when they are clean, though. Every dirty filter causes breathing difficulties. I just cleaned the dry filter on my shop vac. It made a huge difference.

Sometimes masterdebaters get a little carried away on the internet, though. Either type is just fine. There are a few HP to be gained on less restrictive air boxes. Not enough to feel though you might hear a difference. You should have seen the oiled canister filters on our old jeeps in the Army.

At the rpm range that our trucks normally run in you won't notice any performance difference with a K&N or comparable air filter. Over oil them and you'll notice MAF and TPS problems as well as issues with throttle response and fuel economy and probably some codes as well. If they are properly re-oiled after cleaning you'll begin saving the price an air filter replacement after the 3rd or 4th cleaning.

i have a K&N style filter and it has been great for years now and never had any codes thrown, when you oil it just spray it till it turns light red or pink, you dont have to soak it. people are always saying on here that they are junk and cause issues but K&N has been making filters for a hell of a long time and has a great reputation, that did not come from selling filters that screw your car/truck up, the hear say comes from people who cant figure out how to oil a filter correct.

^^ If that's the case why have tests shown that a paper filter can flow as much a K&N?

i never said anything about the amount of flow they have or that they are better than paper, just that they are safe to use as long as the user can oil it correct.

Spray with oil. Makes me think WD-40. Is that correct?
