Possible to install engine w. transmission and transfer case?
First time poster long time reader. I pulled the engine on my new to me 1995 F150 302 4wd to reseal it, fix broken exhaust manifold bolts etc. It seems the manual 5 speed (M50D-R2) has been leaking a lot and had the whine that seems to be typical when they have been running with low oil level. I found another transmission to swap in.
So now my question is what is the easiest way to put it back together. Is it possible to mount transmission with transfer case to the engine and install from the top or keep engine separate and put transmission from below and engine from the top like normal?

What trans did you happen to get? Would have been a perfect time to swap in a small block zf

That is great input! I guess if installing engine and trans together it will have to be raised pretty high to get it angled down there. Is that why you recommend doing them one at a time Diesel Brad?
@75Three90: I did read up on the ZF trans but I'll keep it simple and stay with the "Mazda" trans for now.

Just take the transfer case off. What you are calling an extension is the tailshaft housing, it's part of the trans.
As far as leaving the trans or both on the engine, I pulled the engine, trans and transfer case out of my Bronco without separating them. I had an overhead hoist that was a lot taller than most engine hoists I've seen. It was a ROYAL pain, tipping it all up on end to snake it out, then lifting the transfer case up so it would clear everything coming out. I'm with Brad, do the engine alone, then the trans and transfer case separately from underneath.
