U0101 DTC issue

OK, So I start my 2008 6.4 F250 up this morning. All seems normal. Back out of driveway and when I put it into drive I hear a clunk as it changes from reverse to Drive. go about a hundred yards and decide to check it out. Back up to driveway and when I put it back into drive the shifter seems like its not catching and truck does not move real well in forward gear. Get in drive and shut off truck and notice I now have a check engine light on. Shut off truck and try to restart and nothing happens even tho all lights are on normal. Move shift lever and it feels like the linkage is unhooked. Indicators between P R N D 3 2 1 all are real delayed. I move shifter around a bit and return it to Park and I hear the pawl lock in. Truck cranks just a bit but not enough to start and stops cranking. I have an Edge Evolution 6.4L Programmer on the dash. I check diagnostics and it shows the 1 DTC - U0101: Lost Comm With TCM. Upon searching this site I am relieved to find it may be electrical and not mechanical.

I check linkage - all looks intact. Move shifter around a bit and attempt restart - Truck starts. Goes in reverse but still shows delayed indicator lights and goes into D, but feels a bit sludgy. I shut off and reprogram the Edge to return to stock. After its done the truck feels right again and the shifter moves like its attached to something and all feels right. So I'm relieved.

However - The dash Check Engine light is still on even tho I removed the codes with the programmer - the programmer gives me a new code telling me I have to drive it more so it can get more info. A few questions:

Is it OK to drive or do I run a chance of being stranded and waiting for a tow?

Will the check engine light go out after a bit after its driven if all is OK?

Do I have a TCM that is going out or does this occasionally happen - I have had the Edge Programmer on it for over 2 years and never updated it - would this help?

Any thoughts from those who have dealt with this?

truck has 94K miles on it and it was raining last night and it set out.

Can you try unplugging everything on the OBD connector to rule that out?

Yes. I did unplug everything from theODBII port after returning the tune to stock. Updated Programmer and talked to tech at Edge. Truck feels normal now and drove 15 miles on it however it still is showing the Check Engine Light which the Programmer now identifies as a P1000 code which means the truck needs to be driven so the programming can get more information before deleting the CEL. After updating the programmer I have now reprogrammed it back to Level 2 and it did not show any faults. I think the connector to the ODBII may have been loosened by a knee - anyway I hope so. I'll see if the CEL shuts off. My car took 30 miles for the CEL to shut off after it lit up.

Truck has done the same thing U0101 DTC - lost Comm with TCM. Is this meaning I need a new TCM?

Checking out a post I read about betteries possibly being old and needing replaced. Put 10 amp charger on and batteries are taking 10 amps 1 hour later. The batteries are the originals that came with the truck when built. so there at least 8 yrs old. Sounds to simple but what the heck

Amazing they have lasted this long. My truck started acting weird, dash brake light came on, etc. After reading many posts here, I suspected batteries and turns out it was the batteries going bad.

I put 2 new batteries in and no change. Checked for any loose fuses or relays. still no change. my wifes tellin me to pay the piper and get hauled to a shop. Sucks. Concerned about dealership screwage on parts pricing and labor billing. BTW both motorcraft batteries were still sporting green dots. Probably need new ones tho soon anyway.

Follow up - had vehicle towed to dealer. Found a corroded and broken ground wire(actually 2 grounds into one), which I guess took out the TCM with the second issue. I guess when I was checking the connections the first time I must have re-established the ground connection and got another 200 miles before the wires separated again. Total bill was $1053 including tax. TCM was $567 - saw them on an aftermarket site for $419 plus shipping so I was kinda surprised that the dealer price wasn't higher. $390 for labor, $50 for shop supplies - running ground wires.

Hope if someone else has this issue it helps - as there was not much on this at any site
