I have a 79 F150 with a 302. At one time it was a three in the tree but it has been converted to three on the floor. I want to put something in with more gears but not sure what will work. I just don't like driving down the highway at 55 and the motor at 3000 rpms ( not sure don't have a tach but sure seems like it.) I need something that i could actually shift down to pass with. Right now if i shifted down to pass at 55 i would be afraid the motor would blow. Any thoughts or ideas would be great.
what you could do is buy an overdrive unit out of an 80's ford p/u. or you could get the np435 or t18 trans (cast iron 4 speed) and just gear the hell out of the rear end. taller tires would help too, but it'll throw your speedometer off by a few mph.
If you wanted to the automatic route you could use a c5 out of a explorer or older ranger or an AOD would work too volts right up if you get the trany mounts. If you the AOD way you hav to get the computer and wire a power source in then you can program it and change the shift points.

I bought one of those 80s truck ,van, granada overdrives that 76f150super was talking about. I was going to use it for the same reason you are talking about. But when i got it the front bearing was out. I never fixed it .I just pulled the 302,dropped in a 460,used a c/6, changed the rear gears to 2.75 . Now the RPMs are down and i still have plenty of git up and go. It had the 302 / granny gear 4/speed and the 2.75 gears in it when i got it,but the trany was shot. This is in a 79 f-100 ,which is not very heavy and i don't plan to haul anything, got a f-350 to do that.
