Has anyone added a second alternator to their gas engine pickup? I'm thinking about adding an on board welder using a delco cs144 alternator. I have a 90 f250 with a 5.8 and air conditioning. The AIR pump and brackets are gone, i was wondering if i could sneak one in it's place. Help anyone?
Its all going to be a custom install, but it has been done before. I seen dual alternators on a early 80's 300 I6, this was with V belts. With a serp belt setup your going to have to pinch the 2n'd alternator's pully with idlers. And the smog pump location is probly the best place to put it.
I'm going to try and put a 2nd alt on my 95 E350 Bus as I am going to use a inverter system for the coach house power(120ac). The problem I have is there are 2 A/C compressors allready installed on the engine, factory one for the cab and the other for the rear A/C unit. The current alternator is a BIG aftermarket one as with the rear AC unit there is one heck of a load on it! And thats why I need a 2nd alternator.
I have a 89 F250 with a 351W with out air. I am thinking of machining a adapter plate to remove the idler pulley ware the AC compressor would be and mount a 3G alt there.

I had an 88 F250 w/o AC. I'm sure you can fit something in that space. Good luck.
