My baby is romping in 40* weather. I put new glow plugs in about 2 years ago. I haven't ohm'd them to test yet. I used a volt meter to check my gpr and it turns on. It stays on for 1 minute.
I thought I read on here that it is supposed to stay on for 2 minutes.
Can somebody correct me if I'm wrong?
And where can I get a gpr led?

 

It can stay on for up to two minutes. It depends on oil temp and ambient temp, and the PCM then tells the GPR how long to activate. Really cold ambient and oil temps will command the full two minute GPR operation.

For the LED, just a regular 12V LED will do.

 

Last winter I had no romps when it was below 0. This year in the 40s and she's not happy. I guess I'll try to ohm the glow plugs tomorrow before work

 

Yep, that's the next step for sure. If you used Autolite glow plugs by chance, swap them all for Motorcrafts while you're in there.

 

I used the motocraft gp's when I changed them. The local part store only had a couple. Ended up going to a few different stores to get them

 

Looks like you've been around FTE a while, so you're probably familiar with the $.50 mod. If you haven't done the mod, I could see one end of the UVCH connection working loose, causing you to lose one or two glow plug connections. Or, GPR was stuck on at some point, and burned out one or more plugs. Or, maybe just a Motorcraft that died too soon.

 

Yes I've been here awhile. But I'm no expert by far. I can do a little here and there. I did the .50 mod when I replaced the injectors and gp's

 

I done a little research and saw a post that said to test the ohms on the post of the gpr. Mine was around 16 so I tested each gp at the vc. All were between .9 and 1.6

What is my next step?

 

did you check the voltage on both big posts on the GPR ? Sometimes they click & will light a test light but there will be quite a bit of voltage lost...just a thought.

BTW I was told that the romps were always oil related & the only things that cured mine was Rev-X or full Syn 5w40 oil

 

Yes I used a volt meter on each post. It has the proper voltage but only stays on for 1 minute.

 

Wow, BJ. So, you've got voltage coming from the GPR, and you've got proper resistance for each glow plug at the UVCH. I would ohm each glow plug lead from the UVCH connection back to the output post on the GPR. Also, I have heard of GPR relays working intermittently. Perhaps the times you metered the GPR output it was working, but isn't other times? One other thing - have you changed to a heavier oil since last year?

 

I was wondering if it just happened to work the couple times I tested it and not on other times. I'm going to go ahead and pick up another one. I don't know how long that one has been in the truck. It was there when I got it about 3 years ago.
The oil was just changed recently but I don't remember what I put in it now.

On a side note when I pulled the intake tube to ohm the gp's I saw that my compressor wheel is in real bad shape. It has no play in the shaft so I guess when the filter that came with my mac intake came apart it ate up the wheel. So I ordered a few more parts
