fuel mileage
hi guys, i need some help on somethings for my 2004 PSD F250 cc4x4. I need better fuel mileage only getting 12-13.5 around town (no hard driving). Im looking at putting a SCT SF3 tuner on it just going to be using it for towing and a round town driving and maybe some high performance once in awhile. My neighbor has done some research and said that i need to change the thermostat. Im running a AFE filter and Banks 4" catback monster exhaust.

You should get rid of the air filter and return it back to the stock filter it is a better filter. A Scangauge II would be a good investment. It has 24 digital gauges and scans for trouble codes. You probably do need a thermostat as my truck was running at 170 degrees and knocked my fuel mileage down to 12 and 13 mpg. I changed the thermostat and now my Scangauge is reading 190+ which is the operating range plus I am able to keep an eye on the engine oil temp which should run no higher then 15 degrees over the coolant temp. These two temp readings need to be monitored so your EGR cooler does not have a melt down . I also got the latest PCM,FICM,TCM computer flash at the dealership and now I am getting 17.5 mpg in my crewcab dually that is up from 14 mpg. I also have the Scangauge set on instant mpg so I can really squeeze more out of each gallon. This is the second fillup since the reflash so I am thinking I can squeeze 18 mpg on this tank !! The new computer flash has a lot of engine protection strategies like turbo vane sweep when your idling, wrench light when the ECT and EOT are out of range, smoother transmission shifts, and smoother cold starts.

Read these and learn about why the factory intake is better:

And here, have some more general info on the 6.0L, common issues, and simple fixes for them.

We can't stop you from running the thing, but it seems the best results come from the Donaldson.
"Aftermarket filters for the 6.0 are a waste of time, money, and excess dirt. At no power output levels that 99.5% of the general public will ever see are they needed, warranted, or will do any good whatsoever. We have dynoed plenty of trucks and see NO feasible gain on mild to moderately modified trucks, and in my personal experience I have never gotten a mileage increase from one. Simple matter of fact is that not ONE single aftermarket filter that lives up to the filtering efficiency of the Donaldson. The AFE is efficient; the Donaldson is more efficient. Spend your money and time elsewhere. "

Hi 8lug, I went to the ford dealership today(3-11-11) to check to see if i had the latest updates for my truck and they said i did, but i had a code come up for the ficm. They said it is going bad and that could be my problem for poor mpg's. But for them to do it it will cost $1200.00. I have found some websites that they can update the ficm after you send it to them from 225.00-325.00 so i might be checking into that soon.

Go to the 6.0 Tech Folder. There's a link to:
1. Test the FICM yourself
2. Repair the FICM yourself
3. Upgrade your FICM to 58 volts as opposed to 48 volts
My FICM went out about two weeks ago (there's a thread I started), someone pointed me to this fix and it worked perfectly - saved me the $1,200.00!!! Cost me nothing! Next up, I'm doing the 58v upgrade. Don't pay to get your FICM fixed by anybody (Ford dealer or otherwise) until you read that thread - it has worked for many, many people. Let me know if you have questions about it, I just did it.
Good luck.

I'm gonna take my truck by the dealership and have them make sure I have the latest flash. Any other input is GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks.
