Well, the pictures look a LOT better than it really is. They don't show inside the bed which is FUBAR. It also needs a tranny overhaul and badly. It slams into gear in 2nd and 3rd. Fluid was brown/dark brown and pretty low. Also another weird thing is that it shook like an epileptic when I came to a stop. Not just a mild shake, but a concerning shake. It needed a new shifter cable and linkage a long time ago. It almost stalled a few times but I am blaming that on low fuel. return lines look new. The doors don't close very securely, they shake and I can see about 3mm of light through the door frame when closed. It needs a brake job and the IP and injectors are original and need to be replaced soon. The differential was leaking black oil. Looks like it was never serviced. The coolant was damn near perfect.

The pictures look much better than it is in person. I was hoping to buy a truck tonight but I don't know if I want to get into this one. Some one looked at it before me and offered $1500 but he didn't sell it.

Am I being too picky?

Every truck I have looked at, the owner asks me if I am a mechanic by trade. I guess it is because I am so thorough and break out the test strips.

oh man.that thing is trash.
no your not being too picky.
he's asking too much for an old jalopy.
good call on walking away from that money pit.
he'll regret not taking that 1500$ offer from someone when he had the chance.
if people dont want to take care of their stuff, then fine.but they cant ask well maintained/problem free truck prices lol.
a good used E40D will set ya back around 1k from the salvage yards.does he know this?

My point exactly. There have been several near perfect trucks come up in the past few months but they are always gone before I can call or see them. The reason is because the first person to see it buys it. I have heard "I sold it to the first person" so many times. They usually go for asking price, too.

No, just keep looking for a good one. By the time something like that is made right you could have spent less money on a good truck to start with and saved a ton of your time and sweat.

Oh, that's cool. I lived in Round Rock for a little while when I was looking for work last year. My sister used to live in Georgetown. Nice area and close to the country, too. I would have stayed but I got a good job in DFW.

The good thing about my truck search is that I have time. I have a few more months to find that good deal.

This one is in Lewisville so I can see it tonight. I wish they included some minor details like what kind of transmission it has, etc. KBB has it at a little over 2K in good condition. It better be in great condition of they want what they are asking for. I would pay the price if it is worth it.

Most of what is available is 2WD. It snows maybe once a year here, so I probably would rarely use 4WD. I aslo live in the city right now.

ok i see.... well things to keep in mind. these trucks are very very heavy in the front. if she's gonna stay on the pavement thats fine. if you do any off roading (leave the pavement for work or play) the front end will sink in mud ect. (i work on farms so 4x4 is a must) also if you pull trailers and you happen to need to take off up a steep incline the 4x4 is a great help their too. not even locked in putting it in 4x4 low acts like a gear reduction and can help get you rolling if its a heavy load. this applies to pavement as well. wet pavement steep incline can spell disaster just as much as mud.

Ideally I would like to have 4x4 but then I would probably be cutting my options by 3/4 because most trucks here are 2x4. People must have been cheap in the early 90s and not opted for the 4x4.

well then i would suggest you just cut your options by the 3/4. if you want a 4x4 and buy a 2x4 then when the time comes you really need the 4x4 you will be pissed at yourself for buying the truck and then you'll hate the truck because it left you stranded or your having to drive back somewhere to get someone elses truck that is 4x4 and if its a chevy the guy will probably mess with you "ur ford can't do it gotta come get the chevy its a mans truck" blah blah blah (trust me ive been there not a good day) that why i won't ever own another truck that's not 4x4. not because of the chevy guys that does make me mad though. but because i feel like i wasted my money when i know i chose not to get the 4x4 and turns out i really needed it.

i wouldn't spend the extra coin for 4x4, if i lived in a city in Texas myself.some people just don't have a use for 'em.

I just need something good an reliable for right now. My trip is going to be all highway. In a few years once I buy some land, then I will probably trade or sell for a 4x4 but that is several years away judging by my credit.
