2011 EB Tow Thread

Not sure how many here take the time to read through other forums. It can be tough to keep up with the many sources of information on the net. I came across a pretty good thread this evening on another forum, and I thought I would post it here in the spirt of sharing information. For someone on the fence trying to decide EB vs some other engine/vehicle (for me, the other consideration is a 250 w/ the 6.7), this was a good find. In fact, this guy's set up is my exact scenario....boat/trailer/full tank of fuel weiging in around 5K. I figure 7K max with people (4-5) & gear. He makes reference to a PSD comparison, but it's obviously an older PSD and not the new 6.7. As capable as the EB might be, it's a tough comparison on a performance basis alone to the 800lbs of torque on the 6.7.

Nonetheless, I am curious if anyone else out there with an EB has towed anything significant yet and can share any info wrt truck performance and fuel economy.

Just took delivery of an EcoBoost. F150, XLT, SuperCab, 3.73 rear. Did not tow yet. My first real test will not be until May when I will pull a 27' travel trailer, approx. 7600 lb. Replaced a 2000 Excursion V10. Going to be a hard vehicle to replace. Hopefully the EcoBoost will come close to what I expected the Excursion to do for me over the years. Once I pull, I will provide an update. I should have some pretty good stats.

I know what you mean about the Excursion....I had an 05 PSD, and if it weren't for all of the problems I had with the 6.0, I'd still have it. I do like what I see on paper for the EB and am looking forward to seeing more towing experiences as we head into Spring/Summer.

Yes I am excited to see what she can do. I ordered mine to to my #7700 Travel Trailer as well. I can't wait to give it a try once I get it broke in after it arrives. If the numbers are right than I should be quite happy. I am still getting over that fact that I ordered a 3.5l V6 to tow sure hope it is what they say it is.

Had a 1998 F150, 5.4L V8. Bought the travel trailer new in 1999, but I was disappointed in how the 98 pulled. Only had a four-speed auto w/OD, and I had to lock out OD when trailering. Always running high RPM, 3-4000. Terrible MPGs. So I bought the Excursion new in 2000. Loved it. The V10 still ran like a champ. But the body started to rust (fender wells, driver door pretty much shot). Noises in the rear (4.30 LS) if it were a problem, could be big bucks to fix. Only 120,000 on it, but time to move on. I don't tow the camper as much as I did at first, so I can "suffer" a little with the F150, just so I get some better MPGs every day. I was only getting 10 MPG to/from work with the Excursion. I should get 15-17 with the EcoBoost. I live in Northeastern Pennsylvania, so the weather and the hills provide the biggest challenges when trying to trailer, and even keep a vehicle in good condition.

Well this weekend with just over 1000 miles on my 2011 F150 XLT Supercab, Ecoboost with a geared 3:73 rear. I pulled my 6x12 Haulmark enclosed trailer. It is a box style trailer with a cone nose. Had about 1000lbs of weight inside. Furniture items. Drove four hours one way at posted speeds in Michigan and Ohio. I was not happy with what i got in MPG's. Only 10-11 mpg. Now next month I plan on pulling my 27ft travel trailer at about 7200#.

I got about 8-10 mpg with my old 5.4 F-150.

Now, as for pulling that trailer. Could not feel any major drag at all. (note: bed is covered) Now, when I needed to pass a larger truck or people that don't know how to drive the power was there no doubt about that.

Overall I am happy with the tow in general and willing to try again with the travel trailer. Now, upon returning to normal driver I have gotten between 17 and 21 mpg. That I do like!

First tank of gas with the new F150. Truck computer said 13.9 MPGs, hand calculated 14.05. Pretty close. Still waiting for the opportunity to tow. Should really wait till over 1000. Gonna put 500+ on the truck this weekend on a road trip, so that should get me closer to the 1000 mark. I also have a 12' Haulmark V-nose. Got about 10 MPG towing it with my Excursion. Can't wait for the weather to break in the Northeast to be able to get my toys out of the yard and get playing!
