Rube,
You have a great truck to start with. You have an opportunity that few of us have, to drive a relative's truck and it's in great shape to!
Good Luck, I may suggest you join the Early Ford V8 club of America. A lot of us belong to that club. This is the best forum though, lots of information.

That's a beauty. Looks like Stainless grill bars, if not mistaken they were only standard on the 48, don't know if they were optional on the 49. Yea, the hubcaps look like mid 80's, which make me wonder if the wheels are not stock.
That this is in awesome condition, doesn't look like you'll have much work to get er done.

LOL I am lucky indeed! It has some rust issues and the flathead is not up and running just yet, but I have already registered it and in 10 days the insurance kicks in and I will have the axles, wheels, brakes, etc all approved by a mechanic. It sat in a barn for over twenty years, but from time to time my uncles would start it up or piddle with it. Unfortunately they had someone paint over the rust and other issues in the mid 80's and now that will have to be revisited. Looks are deceiving, the paint is holding a lot together at the moment, but YES it is in remarkable shape. I know nothing about these trucks!! I am so lucky to have found this site!!

The engine has the distributor on the right side as looking from inside the cab. This i was told makes it a 49. The id number starts with an 8 and I read that makes it a 48. The mention about the aluminum grill in the thread may support 48. How can I know for sure? Also, I want to repaint the engine. It has a bright blue color on it now, but may have been added years ago. Should it be red or dark blue? Local car guy said sears used the bright blue when they rebuilt engines back in the day.
