Now turbo issues on move
First it was thetrans being weird in -40 and that worked itself out but this morning I came out to continue our journey through Canada and found oil puddles underneath my exhaust pipe. I've seen this about a year before I replaced my turbo with a rebuilt van turbo. I'm stuck in fort Nelson BC and need to get a new turbo asap. Does anyone have a line on a good priced 38R ball bearing? Tried calling Clay but he's closed today.

Haven't taken it off yet but isn't that the only place that will allow oil into the exhaust pipe? What else could it be?
Also, if I do go with the 38R, I have a van turbo right now and the exhaust housing is totally different. I don't think I have the adapter plate anymore that bolts between the exhaust housing and the downpipe. I need to look in the trailer and make sure.
Obviously I tow heavy loads and I've been reading about some people having surge issues with the 38R. Should I go with the 1.15 housing?

How much
How much oil are you puking out? if you take the intake off, is the slop rediculous, gouging the turbo housing? Considering the extreme environments your in, its really hard to say what your against. I would look at those, and if passable, take a fair amount of oil and try to get south, not sure if its fatal yet. You make it closer to MT, and i can come lend a hand for certain, just gauge where the failure or COLD might be is my best advice.

I lost 2 quarts in about an hour just in town not pulling any grades. I'm just scared to get out of town and have it fail up some mountain pass. At least in own here I can get parts and I'm going to check at the parts store and see if they know of anyone around that will let me use their garage for a couple of hours.
I haven't checked the slop, but their's no crazy noises coming from down there. My guess is that the seal just failed. Had the same thing happen a little over a year ago.

Well I got it put in 5 days ago and we made it down to Albuquerque. The new 38R worked well. Pulled alot of steep grades, kept it out of overdrive and kept the RPM's between 1750 and 2700.
Thanks to everyone that offered advice and help and thanks to Clay for getting the 38R shipped up to Canada for me.
On a side note, if you're ever passing through Fort Nelson British Columbia there is a guy named Jerry that works at Fort Nelson Auto Body and also owns a superduty. If it wasn't for this guy letting me use a bay in his body shop to install the new turbo I'd have been hurtin for sure as it was between 0 and 20 degrees outside and snowing.
