Best accessory drive belt set up for 302

Hey Guys,

I think I will go salvage yard shopping this weekend. Any recomendations on bracket/belt set ups for alt, P/S and waterpump?

I don't have the money to go in for one of the fancy billet aluminum kits but was thinking a serpentine set up would be nice.

I know there was a thread on here a few days ago about this but it didn't seem to go real far and I was hoping to get the detail like "I yanked this one out of a 86 mustang" or something similar.

I want to get this and bolt it on so I can continue the mock up on my 52 F1.

Thanks in advance.

You guys are a wealth of knowledge.

I pulled a serpetine set up from a f-150 around a 87 model year 5.0 liter that I hoped was going to bolt up to 351w but was told wouldn't fit. I'm sure if you're going to a wrecking yard you would have no problem scoring one.

There's a reason that the other thread did not yield the results you were looking for...accessory belt systems are a PITA. By the time you find a complete system that you think will work for your application, you try to install it and find that each little variation that you want for your truck causes a major issue with the system. Automobile OEMs changed these systems year to year, model to model...most of us have found that you either accept a complete system as it was built or you get really good at modifying/building your own. I had a crate full of various A/C, alternator, smog pump, tensioners, crank and water pump pulleys that I finally just got rid of because for me it was too much work to try to bring it all together into a system that worked right and looked right. Good luck...

I bought one of the "A/C Eliminator Brackets" from March for $50. After that I found out that I could've ordered a similar bracket from Dorman for $20. This bracket bolts to the head where the AC compressor would have been. You mount the tensioner to that bracket. You can use it to run the alternator, water pump with optional setups for power steering and/or the smog air pump.

Here's the Summit Racing link for one of the brackets: March Performance 1460 - March Performance Air Conditioning Eliminator Brackets - Overview - SummitRacing.com

I'll have to look but for the one I bought, there was a link to a pdf file showing the belt configurations.

Here's the only pic that I have of the installed bracket:

By the way....mine is installed on a 351w, so I had to play around with belt length. On a 302 you should be able to buy any of the 5.0 Mustang setups.

Hello Special 55,

I did some digging and found out that I used a March 30080 A/C eliminator bracket.

The March Performance website has a pretty good installation sheet which shows belt/pulley arrangements here: http://marchperf.com/instructions/Fo...structions.pdf

Do you have stock mounting brackets for the alternator and power steering pump, and stock pulleys for the crankshaft and water pump? If so, this is a low cost alternative.

Hey Dan, and others, for the great info.

I appreciate all the detail and links. I'm mostly starting from scratch. It came with an alt and that's pretty much it. I will dig through the boxes to see what brackets might be in there.

I was figuring I would need most everything though since I was adding the P/S and possibly going the serpintine route.

The main reason serpintine swaps end up in the trash is they use a reverse rotation wp and a big smooth pulley that allows the belt to wrap around it. Most people don't do this...they roll with a hijacked tensioner and a belt that barely touches the wp and stick with the standard rotation wp. I am not against a serpintine system, but IMO they cost to much for what they do. I will stick with V-belts and my $25 pulley kits.

I needed to edit this...I forgot to add the rest in.

Mine is from an 87 T-bird. I bought a smog pump eliminator bracket, but found that I didn't need it-I just used a shorter belt. The next issue the I ran into was the lower radiator hose connector on the radiator exited where the belt was. So, I bought still another size of belt and routed it differently than it was originally routed. As I've yet to run the engine, I can only surmise that it will all work correctly. From the best that I can tell, all original rotational directions have been maintained.

If you're going to change your pulleys and brackets, just make sure you get every part from one engine. As mentioned, every make and model can be different, and a really big pita to make fit with mis-matched parts. With serpentine belts, all the brackets and accessories are solidly mounted, no adjustment, and the tensioner takes up the belt slack. So get the alternator and power steering pump, too, while you're getting stuff. Take everything from the front of the engine. If you can find a complete 5.0 Mustang engine, it'll make a great donor.

Thanks Everyone

This is all great information. I will see if my plan to go to the salvage yard sticks. They're calling for mid 30s and rain right now

Wayne,
I was kinda thinking the same thing. Take every nut bolt bracket and accessory and if I don't need one so be it but better to have it all. Thanks for the 5.0 mustang tip. I'll see whats out there.
