3 speed manual to automatic chng over???

Hi, I have a 56 ford f100 v8 272 with a 3 speed manual transmission. I am wanting to change it over to automatic transmission. I am looking for help with info on the parts that would be needed and what trany would be best and if anyone knows round about how much it would cost? Thank you

There is someone on this site that mated a 272 with a AOD transmission with overdrive. They used an adapter kit. Maybe they will chime in soon.

Your OEM choice would be the Ford-o-matic. Good luck finding a servicable one.

You may also be able to find a Cruise-o-matic from an early '60s vehicle that will marry up to the y-block.

An EXPEN$IVE way to go is with an AOD and an adaptor. $850 for the adaptor, halfway down the page here:

AOD Transmission from PATC, AOD Transmissions

Once you get that digested, an AOD from an '88-'93 vehicle is the preferred unit, as those had the "upgrades" vs. the very troublesome early units.

Rebuild kits, and some info as per application, on the Ford-o:

Fordomatic

I tried to find some for sale, no luck, but I only went through 3 or 4 pages of "ford-o-matic" search.

Heres one sight I found using google it could give you an idea about prices and all but I know there are other places than this one so I'd keep searching around:
