2003 4R70W Tranny-Filter? Confused!?
Okay, I checked the door sticker and I have a "U" which means I have the 4R70W tranny.
2003 Expedition FX4.
I just purchased the FT-114 at the advice of the dealer, but now do not think this is correct. I think I need the FT-105 instead. I have searched and cannot find the exact answer. I don't wanna drop the pan to find out I have the wrong filter! I wanna do it in one day!
Thanks to anyone who can help!
Oh yeah, dealer says I don't even need a filter. He says when they flush it, it cleans it out and I do not need the new filter....Huh?

I was told by Autozone that the 2003 tranny uses 2 different filters, one with a long pick-up tube and one with a short pick-up tube. And the only way to know which one you have is to drop the pan and find out. They recommended buying both filters and returning the one that doesn't get used. Hope that helps.

I don't know what to tell you. I just picked up both from Napa for my 2004.
My door tag shows a W code. In my owners manual that shows a 5 speed manual transmission. Weird. I'm just going to pull it apart and see which one fits.
What is the difference in the short and deep pan? On my Super Duty it has to do with 2wd vs. 4wd.

Some would argue power flush is not good for tranny, and you can't really clean a filter - replacement is the way to go to mimimize contamination of new fluid.

I did my 01 not too long ago. I dropped the pan and then took the filter with me to the parts store. I'm glad I did because they were trying to give me the wrong filter.
I learned a long time ago it is always best to take your old part with you. If not, the next best option is to buy both filters.

4R70W's are easy.
There were only 2 filters ever made for them.
The early style that was flat with no pickup extension made on the filter, and the '96-up that has the pickup extension on the filter. Everything equipped with a 4R70W from '96-present uses the later filter with the pickup extension made on the filter.
You can tell what filter than trans has in it from the outside. If it's a 4R70W with a completely flat bottomed pan-it's the earlier style. If it's for a "dimple sump" in the center that hangs down, it's the later type.
CHANGE THE FILTER-Drop the pan and do it right-do not listen to the morons that want to use that "flush" machine.

Man, THANKS for the good advice and help! I have BOTH filters sitting here and was going to take take BOTH to the dealer so they have them. I also only bought 12 qts of fluid. Should I buy 2 more? (what's the total including draining the torque converter?) 14?
That's a great observation of the pan. I believe I have the "dimple" so it would be the longer/deeper filter of the 2?
I have a FT105 and an FT114 filter. The 114's box looks deeper/thicker than the 105 so I think i'll need the 114.
Also, if I can sneak one more question in here:
How much diff fluid will I need between the 2 diffs? I bought 2 of the Royal Purple 75/140?. I just want everything HERE before I start on it.
BTW, dealer said they only flush the tranny and don't drop the pan. Looks like I'm doing it myself then.

FT114 is a 4R100 filter.
FT105 is a 4R70W filter, and is the correct one. The older version is the FT100.
FT105:
The older FT100 without the "tube":
The FT114 4R100 filter:
You'll need 12-13 qts of fluid-you'll likely not get all of the fluid our of the trans even by dropping the pan. The valvebody and case passages hold around a quart, and then there's some that'll be left in the cooler. Just drop and drain the pan, change the filter and then drain the converter. That's the best you're gonna get-just top it off to full again afterward-I'm gonna say you'll be between 11 and 12 qts depending on how long you let it all drain.
