Searching for an answer

Keeping a long story short...

Lost oil pressure on my sig truck. Removed intake(to remove motor), and found a bent push rod, and displaced lifter. Straightened rod for testing, and found no evidence of binding. Decided to replace them all. Whoa! 2 different lengths available!
Have searched lots of places, found reference to both sizes, but what I can't seem to find an answer to , is

WHY?

Different for intake and exhaust?
To allow for different gasket thickness?

I don't have the tools to properly measure the old ones, so I have no idea what is the appropriate size.

ford changed the deck height of the engines in i think in 71. they went to a taller deck height so this would change the pushrod lenght required. also went to a different rocker arm setup in 72 from the earlier early style engines. the 71 and older engines used a rocker stud and nut on the rocker arm while the 72 and newer use a bolt down style rocker arm.

the only way to make sure which pusrod you require is to take one of the old non-bent ones out and take it in to get measured.
