I have a friend with a jeep that we identified a clunk noise as a loose bolt in a bushing of what he called a "track bar", but reminded me of a sway bar. Not sure if they are the same, but whatever.

Does the noise occur more often when turning or braking?

Nope, there not the same....

I had a body mount in my Mountaineer drive me crazy... For the life of me I couldnt figure it out.. I even rode in the very back of it to try and find the noise.. But when I got back there, the noise would stop... lol...

Symptoms: A very annoying clanking rattle feel coming from front driver's side suspension, mostly noticable in warm weather and louder at slow speeds on small bumpy terrain. Feels like something is about to fall off the suspension at slow speed. I can also reproduce the clanking noise when pressing down on front bumper. I have taken it to Ford dealership and several repairs shops, but no one can find source of the problem with any certainty. I have replaced the front shocks, tightnened bearing packs and replaced upper control arm bushings, but noise and clunking noise at slow speeds is still there. I will send $50 to the first person who gives me info that leads to a fix. If anyone else has experienced this and found a cure, please feel free to email me directly at Lundyusa@Gmail.Com. Thanks, Joe
My 2002 and my brothers 2003 does the same thing we are at a loss as to the source of the clunking I have checked everything from ball joints, swaybar links, loose exhaust you name it. mine started at about 25000 mi, I finally have given up.

"Clank, rattle" doesn't sound like the problem I used to have, but you've looked at everything else, so check that the battery is still clamped down tight. Mine used to slide in the tray and produce a clunk around corners, but it's worth a look-see and it's easy to check. Or maybe the tray itself is loose.

Seems you've done the shock thing already... my noise like yours was on my 93 super long ford van 6 cyl, it was the lower shock mount not the shock, the mount..... Tightn the bolt end of problem. Good Luck

So others have experienced the same problem, if you do find the source of the noise please post it for others who are going crazy experencing the same issue. Closure is a wonderful thing.

I'm having the same issue in my 99 2WD. It sounds like it's coming from the driver's side, but I haven't been able to isolate it to one side. I was thinking mine could be suspension related because the truck developed a slight lean to the drivers side; it's not a lot, but enough where I can notice it since I look at it every day. Have you noticed this on yours??? Any ideas from anybody on what could be causing the lean before I go blindly replacing parts and hope I hit the right one to correct it?

UPDATE ~ Ranger front end rattle fixed, TIE ROD ENDS !!!

Well, no one came up with the winning fix, found it on my own, but I thank you all for the replies. After much online reading and talking with other Ranger owners I ran into, I took a chance that the source of the rattling might be the the inner and outer tie rod ends. PROBLEM IS NOW FIXED !!! Despite several mechanics who looked at the tie rod ends over the last two years and said they looked fine, out of desperation to get rid of that annoying rattle after replacing ball joints and control arm bushings with no luck, I went ahead anyway and replaced the inner and outer tie rod ends (parts $80, an hour of labor and a $50 alignment) the front end now feels like new and is as quiet as can be. Spread the word !

Writerscramp. Take a look at the post I wrote. I do beleive, I said to check the suspension and told you how to check for tie-rod issues. If there was play in them than something was bad. So did many of the other members. As for a reward I don't think anyone wanted it, our reward is your Ranger is riding quietly and smooth. Congrats on the fix.

Who was checking the front end parts. Stevie Wonder? And how come I have to pay at least $80 for an alignment? Who does Alignments for $50 Arthur Fonzarelli?

I paid $80 a week ago myself at the local Ford dealer. The truck feels nice and tight with the new shocks, ball joints, and the wheels pointing straight!

Thank you wp120470

Hi wp120470

You are correct and my apology. Yes, you did make a very brief mention of tie-rod ends in your post on February 22, I missed it until you pointed it out yesterday. I re-read all posts, you are the only one who made any mention of tie-rods. Do you have a paypal account for me to gladly send reward ? Thanks, Joe
