Ok. How do I tell if my pistons are any good? I have them out(from a 390) and they look ok. They are not scratched up or discolored. They have 410 cast into the side along with a 3 on the same side. Also, the widest point of my piston measures 4.025, Will these work in my 360 provided It has been bored .020 over? I am doing the 390 upgrade and am always trying to save a buck. I just figured if these pistons are good why buy new ones? Between that and the 2 good cams I have laying around here that just might save me some money.
Ditto on Rat's advice. If these pistons came from a rebuilt engine with a known history I'd consider using them, But...Big But here..I never cut corners on the rotating assembly. Good machine work, quality parts and careful reassembly are my rules. All that stuff is deep in the motor and a real PITA to pull back out and fix. If a piston fails you will wish you had bought new.
hhmmm...well...I guess I will stick with the master kit including new pistons and a cam.
Im looking into a fedral mogul master kit and it says it comes with a cam and lifters but it doesnt say anything about pushrods. You guys think they come with?
Also, ccan someone explain the differance in moly rings to me plz? Thanks to all!!!!
Not sure what Cam they would include there, maybe your choice of a few different models? There are a lot of choices for cams, I'd make sure to get what you want there. It's one of the biggest contributors to getting the performance you want.
I'd be surprised if pushrods were included, but you shoud ask the retailer.
Moly rings are coated to retain oil, break in quicker and do not wear the block like chrome rings. Tell the machinist to hone for moly rings with a 400 grit final.
even if you are hoping the block doesn't have to be bored, you should still have the shop give the bores a fresh hone pattern. Your new rings will thank you for it. New rings on an old pattern might have trouble 'seating' Df
