3000 miles trip

I left Texas and went to Maryland, through Ark, Tenn, Ky, W.V. got 8.0 to 7.5, wanted better , but don't we all. It had no problem pulling, got into 3rd gear more than once trying to keep up with traffic going 70mph. 8000 lbs bumper pull travel trailer. Had a horrible head wind comming home , all in all the truck pulled great. Got 7000 miles on it now.
6.2 full steel flat bed crew cab dually 4.30 gears 2wd

If you slow to 65-70 you will get it, or at least I am on long trips. I set my cruise at about 67-68.

I got 16 before going 70. I had a small tail wind but still got 16. Keep it around 70 and you will be good, otherwise don't complain you didn't buy this truck to save money on gas.

So, I've got about 5000km on my truck now. Overall, I'm quite impressed. I've been tracking my mileage regularly (hand calc'd after almost every fill). Generally I've been getting about 14mpg for city driving (stop-n-go b/w 60-80kph), 16mpg highway unloaded (110-120kph), and 9mpg highway towing an 8000lb 30ft travel trailer. I had one bad stretch of towing a couple weeks ago heading into a 90kph headwind - 250km's cost me $120 bucks for fuel (avg'd 6.5mpg), but the truck handled the trailer very well despite the hurricane...

Report on our Texas trip
We drove the truck 2460.3 miles used 171.803 gals of 87 octane gas and averaged 14.321 mpg. The air conditioner was always on, following a tip from 2000silverbullet, I checked the speedometer against my phone and found the speedo was off by a consistent 3 mph low. On the trip, I used the cruise most of the time set at the actual speed limit. The truck had no problems, although several times in hilly parts the transmission shifted down to 4th. The highest tank mileage on the trip was 17.154 mpg on a day where the speed limit was 55 or 65. The lowest was 13.87 mpg, mostly stop and go and mostly town driving. The highest miles to empty came in at 677 miles. The seats were comfortable much better than the 2000 xlt. I was easily able to drive 750 miles a day and be able to go the next day. The bed was loaded by time to come home. A good truck and can get reasonable mileage.
Best regards,
Russ

I just got back from a 17 day camping trip from Minnesota to Durango CO and parts in between. I was pulling a 36 foot travel trailer that weighed in at 9850 pounds.

My average for the entire trip was 10.3 mpg. Keep in mind that most of this was towing, but a portion was sight seeing without the trailer. An example was driving to 14,000+ feet to Pikes Peak or to the Garden of the Gods.

Except for Wolf Pass with a steep grade peaking at 10,000 feet I was impressed with the trucks towing. The trailer never overwhelmed the truck. On Wolf Pass I did have to go to 'M' and shift from 1 to 2 in an effort to keep my speeds at 30mph.

I did post mid-trip that I have some regrets not getting the 430 rear-end. On flat terrain with little or no head wind and the cruise set at 63mph I spent roughly 60% in 4th and 40% in 5th. Most of the posts I've seen doesn't show much difference in MPG when NOT towing between the 373's and the 430's, so I can only assume the 430's would have given me less high speed shifting back and forth and more power climbing the mountains with the higher altitudes.

Bottom line is the truck met most of my expectations, got decent mileage, was very comfortable, and looks damn nice. One more point: The Ford Super Duties clearly dominated every one of the five campgrounds we stayed at.

I too see about 3 mph difference between a GPS and the speedo, with the speedo being low. So that would mean we are getting more miles per gallon then it is showing. And it does not matter how fast I am going it is 3 mph low, 25 is really 22 and 65 is really 62. Not sure if that is because of the 18" wheels and the speedo set for the 17's or just not calibrated correct. Pretty odd that more then 1 truck is seeing the same difference in truck speed to GPS.

A Correction. I reread my post and noticed wrong info. The highest distance to empty was 577 miles not 677 as I incorrectly wrote
kmonty2, I agree it is odd the speedo is off consistently 3mph.
This is a nice truck.
Best regards,
Russ

Variations in speedometers are normal. For pacing purposes, local and state police squads have the speedometers checked on a dyno type machine where the speed is set. Most speedometers in the squads are 1-3% off the actual speed. If you see one of the Speed Trailers out that display your speeds, hold a steady speed at say 30mph and see what readout is displayed on the speed trailer. The radar in those are tuning fork checked for accuracy event though they are only used as an information/public safety tool.

You guys are confussing me (which isn't too hard ) but I know compared to my GPS when I'm reading 70MPH on the Speedo the GPS tells me I'm doing 67MPH. Now in my thinking that would say my speedo is reading fast not low. Also that would mean that my fuel mileage is actually worse than better. I would only be going 67 miles in an hour and not 70 miles as the speedo/odo would register. Aha maybe that is the reason Ford is reading MPH higher than I'm actually getting because then I'll come back here and brag about what great mileage I'm getting.
