Animal life had adapted to years of salt water intrusion into the Everglades. So much so, that when South Florida moved into an unusually heavy rainfall pattern some of the wildlife struggled with the environmental changes. Scientists noted that one species of frog was nearly wiped out, but biologists were eventually able to save it. They determined that the changes had caused the frogs to secrete an oily film that clung to their bodies. It was so slick that the frogs were physically unable to mate! Reintroduction of salt into the environment was the long-term fix, but salt alone wasn't enough to reverse the effects already seen in the frogs. One scientist discovered that a compound based on a single sodium atom was effective at turning the secretion into a tacky substance and the frog population was saved. At the press conference, the scientist explained, "all they needed was monosodium glue to mate".
