6.0L Sucks on Fuel Milage

GM 3500 CC/SB 4x4 diesel usually weighs in around 7-7500 depending on how its equipped. A GM 3500 2wd short box, reg cab is about 6,200 but I need 4 doors & 4x4.
I guess I want a smaller diesel in a lighter chassis that will do 20+ hwy unloaded.
I think we need to shave 2,500 lbs to get there- but still be able to tow 10-12,000lbs. The engineers can do it when they stop fixating on the current high, high torque/towing wars they have been in for 10 years!

Amazing how much computer-tech is in the dash.
Must have been nearly 18" of leg room in the crewcab
in front of the rear seats - WITH front seats all the way back.
Was told a "rumor" has it the Explorer will get a 4.0L Ecoboost
engine later in the year, the wife liked hearing that.

I get to go to sdchool for 2 days on the engine in march. should be fun. I dont do much gas work anymore but hey traing is days not spent in the shop. Im waiting for one to come in the shop so I can "test drive" it.
see thats what we tech do with our customers cars... we take them out on a road test to see if we like them or not.... sad I know.

I have an 04 ECab SB .... best I've gotten is 15-16 HWY staying at or below 65MPH....before I figured out it takes an addition 5min to actually fill the tank after the auto fill clicks off it was all over the place from 20mpg down to 11mgp.
I went all synthetic didn't seem to make any difference... but it's still a blast to drive.

That's not bad loaded down in the hills...10mpg.
Unloaded on the road I think you'll find 17mpg about max in a 4wd SuperDuty...I've tried and replaced everything but the heads and injectors...if I drive like granny I can get clost to 18mpg under 65 mph...

Many variables affect mpg
MPG on these diesels are extremely variable; weather, wind, road grade, Ford reflashes to prevent head gasket destruction, tire size, tire inflation, type of driver, etc. For instance, a friend of mine and I took a trip to Florida last year, 1800 miles each way, and we each took turns driving as we drove straight through; 20 hrs. His method of driving was on the pedal and 5 second later foot off. That was his method; on-off-on-off. I mentioned to him that every time he took his foot of the pedal the tranny would come out of lock-up and it would take a few more moments to lock-up. I, in turn, controlled pressure on the accelerator pedal without a full release....he average 15.5 and me, 17+ mpg. So there is an instance where driving a certain way can influence mpg. It was also mentioned that brake calipers not totally releasing brake pads on the rotor is a factor on loss of mpg. This is true and it will directly influence mpg loss. This happened to me as well as others that have posted here. I guess it is wise to replace calipers when changing brake pads. Good luck in solving your low mpg. Mike...K80.
