New 1996 f150 4.9L 5 speed questions

Well I just purchased another truck. This truck is so clean it looks new off the line. Garaged since new and always maintained.
What kind of weight can I tow with it. Bumper pull and 5th wheel. Any modifications for more power? Mpg?

Thanks

do a search, theres so much information about this. what gear ratio is your rear end? check out the ford 300 forum to see what kinds of mods are done to these motors. without tearing the motor apart, you should probably just do a good tune up and slap on a turbo muffler. tune up would include cap, rotor, plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, etc. aka the "6 litre" tune up. if you dont already know about the 300, youll learn that its a great pulling motor with lots of low end torque. im really not sure what your truck can pull, but my boat is a little over 3000 pounds and i hook to my bumper all the time without a problem. I tried doing a search, but when I type in a keyword and select the forum/category i want it searches all forums anyway. I haven't picked up the truck yet, but have paid for it already. Flying to Louisiana tomorrow to pick it up and drive it back to Texas. Don't know the axle ratio yet. Hoping it's 3.55 or 3.73 and not the 2.55's or 3.08's.

these motors seem to like 3.55 gearing. however i have 2.73's in my truck and it seems to chug right along with any amount of weight i put in it, and i can cruise at 70 and still get decent mpgs. 3.55 or 3.73 would be good if your hauling loads around town. good luck with that trip. you must really trust the truck!

I have one and tow a two horse trailer pretty regular in the summer at slower speeds , 55 mph , with a heavy duty receiver hitch and it does fine. The problem with these trucks is not the engine but the wimpy *** clutches. Be very careful when backing a load , seems thats the best time to smoke a clutch. Wish the reverse was a granny gear.

The 300/5-speed combo is unstoppable. The 300 is a workhorse and will pull hard all day long, day after day. The mazda 5-speed will be the weak link, but mine lasted 150k of HARD towing before it died.

As for weight, iv towed 10k+ behind my 300/zf5 combo with a 3.55 rear end and 33in tires, giving me an actual ratio of 3.08. add the total weight of my truck, 6k giving me a grand total of about 16k. And i didnt have any problem keeping up with traffic. However, you will have to give it a little time to get up to speed.

and, i would not suggest towing that much weight behind a normal f150, but its nice to know that 5k or so is nothing for that beast.

Well that's good to know. I really want to get a nice 5th wheel of at least 23 feet. I like towing at 60-65 mph. From all that ive heard about this motor, it sounds like it can pull as much weight as my excursion 7.3 diesel. Rated at 12,500 lbs. Currently I have light trailers. 3500 lb boat and 7 jet skis.

You biggest enemy is going to be the large profile of a travel trailer. However, i have towed some really big high profile loads that sat on a tall flat bed, and i never had a problem holding 70, and even passing on the hills.

I think the biggest thing that turn people away from the 300 is that it really takes a long time to get up to speed. But if you give it some time it will pull anything. They are great little engines.

Good question, not to long ago, i wouldnt have been able to stop it, but after a close call i really beefed up the brakes. 1 ton brakes front and rear, as well as hydro-boost. It stopped 16k on a dime

any chance you could share the specifics on what kind of brakes you bought? you found 5 lug one ton brake rotors? also, what is hydro boost?
