Better gas mileage

I have a 2001 F250 with the 7.3 diesel. Im wanting to do some stuff to get some better gas mileage. I don't know if I need the programmer or the chip. Which is the better one to get. Im also gonna install cold air intake.

You should be getting fairly decent mileage already with your 7.3. If I remember right I got around 14-16mpg city and close to 18-19 hwy stock with 3.73 gears , a tailwind and empty of course. What are you getting now?

I'm getting about that. Just figured I could get more. As far as the gears go I just bought the truck so I'm guessing the gears are stock.

You have a lot available as far as power adders and options. Not sure how much fuel economy you'll pick up but you'll just have to do the cost vs benefit analysis and see what suits you best. Good Luck!

lower it to the ground and if it is 4x4 convert it to 2wd.....honestly you would spend alot of money to squeeze out 1 or maybe 2 mpg. in my opinion the best way to get better mileage is to drive like granny, never rev it high and don't drive fast

I usually only go like 68 on the Hwy. Always try to keep rpms under 2000. And I also want it to have more power so I'm gonna do something to it. Just was hoping to get better mpg in return.

Morning.. Before you go spending a lot of money on her to get better milage, swing over to the 7.3 forum and ask away. 1999 - 2003 7.3L Power Stroke Diesel - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

Dont get me wrong, you can do your own research as well, but as far as a cold air intake, many of us have gone in and did the 6637 for cold air, 65.00 as compared to the 200+ for other units. The next up grade for better milarge was a 4" exhaust. These two items, to best of my knowldege, were the only things that ever helped me with better MPG. The other thing that helps is what you are doing now, under 2000 rpms.

When you are ready to shop, check this guy out, he is one of us, and so far his prices have not been beat, that I am aware of Riffraff Diesel

Now for more power, there are many choices, it will be based on what you want to do though. I did the Hypertech, and never regreatted it, it was the only tuner that you could strap on with no gages. But after hanging with the 7.3 forum, I became a PAA memeber.. stay clear, it cost you money. But since then, i have the DP tuner with gages.. If you have any concerns, always ask, most will give you the best thought on the subject they can.. Good Luck, and fun with the truck.

Driving techniques is 90% of the success. The 2000 rpm advise is good starting point, but not really technical one.
I drive 10,000 lb shoebox (dually flatbed). At 65 mph it turns almost 2500 rpm, yet I am recording steady 13, sometimes even 14 mpg.
Just set CC to this speed on next long drive and see how much farther you will make it on tank.

My Favorite muffler sound came from the Aero Turbine, That was the whip to me in sound. But.. to my knowledge they do not sell a complete exhaust system, plus they are pricey. DO NOT BUY INTO THE HYPE OF MILAGE INCREASE.

There are several systems out there, MRB being the most common, depending on where you live should dicatate whether you get a stainless steel, or alumnized.

I myself am running with out a muffler.. she sounds good, to me.

If I may ask, What is the "6637 for cold air"? Thanks
There must be something wrong with my truck. The overhead console tells me I am getting around 24mpg. I have reset it several times and it always goes back to that. I bought the truck about a month ago. It has 200k miles on it, crew cab, 4x4 with the 7.3L. The only thing I can tell has been done to it is a K&N air filter and the exhaust. I would guess its a 4" straight pipe with a huge tip on it. no cats, mufflers or anything. Seriously doubt that a chip is in it, doesn't blow much smoke when I get on it.

Good Morning, the 6637 was something that came up on the 7.3 forum, I dont recall who actually gets credit, but it has been called for a while the kwik 6637. Riffraff Diesel: RDP 6637 Filter Kit.

I wish I could help you more, all I can do is guess at this point. Since you are running the 4", I wonder if the exhaust back preasure sensor is not getting what it expects, claiming better milage.. just a thought, otherwise, chip.

Hope I helped..

Exhaust could help some but it may never pay for it's self as most things wouldn't. You could get highway tread tires next time those comes due.

For me.. and only me. I gained 2 mpg on the highway. I gained nothing in the city..Exhaust is about 650.00, it is a slow pay off.. but it sounds good toooo
