which transmission pan do I have

I went to Napa today to pick up a transmission filter and they asked if it had the deep pan or the shallow pan. Its a 99.5 F-250 crew cab 4x4 with the 7.3 powerstroke. It may sound like a stupid question but with no other truck to compare it to Im not sure. Any help would be appreciated. Mike B

It is odd there would be a difference.. the sealing surface you would think wouldn't change..

It isn't the gasket that is different, it is the filter that matters.

The only difference is the length of the pickup tube, i am surprised the book doesnt tell them which pan the 4x4 has thanks for your help i will pick up the deep pan filter tomorrow.

I believe I read somewhere the 4x4 has a deeper pan to help ensure fluid pickup while driving on uneven surfaces. Seems like an oddly shaped pan but I suppose the engineers know what they are doing.
(can't believe I just said that...)

All 4R100's have the deep pan, whether 4x4 or 4x2. There was a difference in the E4OD, but not with the 4R100. The E40D 4x4 filter is the same as all 4R100's. I don't know why parts stores don't have the proper info on this.

Even if it did, for some applications, it wouldn't help.

For the Gen 2 Lightning guys, swapping the deeper 4x4 4R100 trans pan onto the L (along with the corresponding trans filter, of course) is a common mod.

Good to know. I always thought that 4x4 pans were different...
When I ordered a new pan from Ed, he asked if my truck was 4x4 or 4x2. That's why I thought there was a difference. Thanks for correcting me.
