I just installed the Ford AIS and the install was simple but I have a couple of questions:
Where the air intake comes out to the front grill area, it seems to be blocked by metal (about an inch away) with just a small hole in that metal area.
Can that be drilled out or make several holes to capture more air from the outside? Maybe a screen in front to stop bugs from getting in?
Should I see any noticeable performance difference with the install?
Yes it is easily modified and most on here refer to it as the ZooDad mod, search for it and you should find a writeup. As for performance? I dont know really, I didnt notice any in the SOTP dyno.
Here's what it looks on the outside of the grill. I cut out the fiberglass and installed a raingutter grill from the hardware store to keep from sucking in bugs, birds, small children, etc...
I like it! My plan is to to get another grill (maybe a 2004-2007 model) and then perform the "ZooDad." Maybe I could just make multiple holes with a 1/4 " drill bit and also cover with screen method. Something to think about........
Question: did it help though or is it in the unknown area?

Thanks for all your help!
Yes you could just drill holes & really not even worry about any screen. I just used a gutter downspout deal & put some alum expanded metal over it, it's what I had handy. As far as help IDK but it can't hurt getting cooler air to the air box. Did you put the fender sleeve on the AIS?
No to fender sleeve. Just didn't want to screw around too much. I am not the most mechanical kind of guy meaning I could take things apart but not always get back in and have left over parts! (<:
I read someone mentioned something about the potential of water accumulation in the bottom of the AIS housing and filter getting wet. Have you experienced this associated problem too?
did you notice any performance improvement with mod in conjunction with Ford AIS or is this a subjective issue??????
Did Ford conduct such a test between new AIS and stock version?
Why did Ford anyway make this an option? Just for a piece of market share?

The AIS has a substantial air flow increase as compared to stock, especially with the addition of the fender sleeve. As far as improving performance it certainly can't hurt. The AIS is good for over 400 RWHP. With my power mods I am at or near 450 RWHP running the AIS with fender sleeve.
I have never seen a flow test that was done by Ford comparing AIS to stock air box and filter.
I'm sure Ford wouldn't have had Donaldson design the AIS if they couldn't make money on it, plus the AIS does have it's advantages in severe duty situations over the stock air box and filter. Much better filtration and longer interval between filter changes.
I did not do the fender sleeve. I will drive though some dusty dirt back roads in the summer so I felt the AIS would be beneficial as compared to stock so thats why I did the upgrade.
I had a 99' with a stock and then went to the K&N drop in to the stock box. Both got badly dirty. Hopefully this new AIS will be the ticket.

Thanks!
For severe duty you did the right thing. The AIS is for good filtration, not really performance.
Glad you got rid of the K&N.
The fender sleeve in severe duty would not be a good thing. Fine for paved roads but would just get the filter dirty faster in the dirt. Good thinking on not installing it.
Thanks for the opinion.
Yes, we have property in Montana and its "Off the grid." 11 miles of dirt road and if someone is a head of you its like driving through a big fog. I usually have to wait for it to clear a bit before proceeding ahead, its that bad!
This was my concern about making the ZooDad mod also.......maybe not an issue.
