Many of the better quality speaker systems, Boston Accoustics Pro SE for example, have seperate tweeter mounts that make it a rather simple task to mount the tweeters virtually anywhere on the dash or above. If you personally find that impractical then you could always leave the tweeters attached to the bass/mid driver and mount them as a unit in the door or kickpanel. On my DD the tweeters are factory mounted in the door handle assembly...it brings the high frequency driver up closer to eye-level and improves the spacial imaging. This is why I started this thread in the beginning...to see if anyone here had gone through a professional sound system installation and could share their experience/design. I am still about 6 weeks away from building my system so I thought that I would start the discussion.

Good thread as I have learned a lot already. Mostly what not to do.

I realize where optimum location is but where is a practical location without spending a zillion dollars on trick stuff?

I have no visors in my truck. I am tall and so I do not plan to replace them either. I have thought of having tweeters mounted where the visors mount. High enough to be out of the way, but with component pairs of mid and tweeter and a pivotable mount you could angle them to project the sound towards the center of the cab more so than straight down.

Would that be an acceptable solution? (Not only for you, I am also asking for a logic check from the experts.)
