How to paint the interior panels?

How would I go about repainting the interior panels, I.E. (The Dash a few other panels)

They are currently blue and I'd like them to be black.
What paint should I use, how do I keep it from scratching or peeling off?
Do I sand it down first?

Thank you,

Andrew

I wash them with dawn dish detergent and water. Scrub them really well. When they dry, I wipe them with laquer thinner and then wipe them with a tac rag.

Set them in the sun to get them warm and paint them with the Krylon fusion paint. Some use SEM paint. Let it dry and re install.

I'll be honest with you I did the prep that first today talked about plus hit them with a very very very very easy grit sand paper and painted the with a rustoleam paint. They have help up for over 4 years for me.

there was a really good thread a while back, extreme makeover, ems cab edition

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...b-edition.html

She did a really good job covering redoing interiors. She painted a lot of her panels, and they turned out well.

I did mine as 'First Today' described with Krylon except wiped them down with ammonia based cleaner. I went from blue to red and they came out really well. They've held up for 4 years with not a hint of fade or peel.

She did a great job and I thoroughly read her posts before doing my own interior. I started my own thread and I think you'll find a lot of helpful info there, along with before and after photos. Essentially though, what has already been said above is true. You'll see on my thread I'm a strong advocate of SEM since it gave me such superb results.

Good luck on your project!

The two most important items are surface prep and cleanliness. Removing any faded/damaged surface crud, and all dirt/grease/fingerprint oil is essential to having a good result.

For the budget minded individual such as I am (cheap), will the Krylon Fusion line give me good results as long as I prep well? Skeneguy above says he has had good longevity with that product. Any other experiences with it?

All my panels are now in good shape, thanks to two different donors, but they are all different colors.

My panels for my 79 have been painted for five years now, but are still sitting in the shed. I can not say how it works in use. They look great now, but I guess the heavy layer of dust helps keep them protected.

I used Krylon Fusion a few weeks ago when I got all the interior trim pieces that I needed to do put in a headliner. I cleaned them thoroughly with dish liquid and water, let them dry, and painted them with two coats, and so far it's working out pretty well. But then again, it's only been a few weeks..
