What to expect when buying a high mileage v10

I was looking at a 2000 F250 4x4 ext cab auto with 290,000 on it. They are wanting 4500 for it at an auction.
It's a nice looking truck but with that many miles I'm thinking the drivetrain may need rebuilding or replacing soon eng, trans, x-case, rearend poss front end.
I might be ignorant on that way of thinking though but to me that's a lot of miles.
Does the timing chains get replaced on these newer gas engines at anytime (interval).
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't know about the timing chain or anything but I know these are great motors. My dad has 250,000 on his and has don nothing more major then ball joints. And he pulls a 10,000 pound trailer around everyday.

if your comfortable with buying it and expecting a breakdown (put money away for it), then sure why not..

at that price its a good buy, and who knows it might just drive another 290K with no problems..

just dont go into it and be surprized if something fails in short order..

Good to hear on two points.. I paid $5,000 for mine with 160k, and I thought the same about reliability on the engine when buying mine. Down side, looks like I may have to replace a couple of syncros in the tranny.
