I have an 09 39000+ miles that just started giving me major problems. I just did a 2000 mile trip from cincinnati ohio to minneapolis minnisota with no problems, average about 19 mpg, which I think is pretty good. This morning I go out to start my truck to leave and it cranks really long before it finally fires up. but then the idle is really rough. when I try to give it gas it just sputters and does nothing and eventually stalls. I have tried messing around and have gotten it to start and then have been able to get the rpms up to about 3000-4000 and it seem fine, but after a few minutes it drops back down to idle then dies. I am low on gas an the low millage just came up with the 50 mile warning, but it should have enough gas. When ever I try to put it in gear it just stumbles and dies.

fortunately I bought the extended warranty but I would like to see if anybody had any ideas before I call a wrecker to come tow it to the dealer?

Fortunately you have the Warranty.
There has been a lot of discussion on the other forums about almost the same condition, meaning a long trip, very low fuel in the tank and the vehicle won't start.
In many cases it ended up being the fuel pump, it's in the gas tank. Apparently the fuel cools the pump and check valve and in a low situation the fuel pump can overheat and fail.
It's something to start checking anyway.

 

Well, it appears to be the fuel pump. I have been waiting for the dealer to get to it since last tuesday. They finally "figured" the problem friday afternoon, but still needed to get the extended warranty company. Of course the tech working on it was out sick yesterday and today so they have finally assigned it to another tech who will need to contact the waranty company. Hopefully I will get it back soon. They finally game me a loaner car today becaues of the time it is taking to get it fixed.

 

Some Dealers are better than others, unfortunate that these 'waits' happen some times. Changing out the fuel pump will be an expensive job by the time they are done, hooray for your warranty and finally a loaner car.

I had the 100k/5y warranty on my XP and I used it too. Finally, at 98k miles the LLS failed and they replaced most of it, my $50 deductible was a bargain.

I've always wondered why the 'Low Fuel' light comes on and there is still almost 5 gallons left in the tank. After reading these forums about the cooling effect of the gas in the tank I believe it's set that way so there is always enough fuel in the tank keeping the pump cool and it doesn't overheat.
I've changed my bad habit of running low on fuel, now I try not to let it go below 1/4 of a tank.
