No computer needed for an AOD. E4OD and AOD-E need a computer.

Can use the later WAY1 computer from a 95ish 5.0 truck. It will control an E4OD, is MAF and only uses one O2 unlike the A9P Mustang computer that some like for MAF swaps.

Edit: I just saw it's a 96. You'll need a harness to use the 95 and earlier computers. You can use the 96 ODBII computer - it's a better choice as it's faster and will take a flash tuner but it's also a bit of uncharted territory.

Here's a harness for the earlier computer. http://rjminjectiontech.com/?p=3

If this engine/trans combo was all from the same truck you have the E4OD trans. The AOD is an all mechanical overdrive that will also bolt up to the 351w but it was never factory installed behind this motor in trucks. Having one would greatly simplify the wiring necessary for this project and open up the options to aftermarket EFI kits including those that utilize the Mustang computers.. It can be made to work and you can use the WAY1 style computer if you want to go ODB1. You'll need to figure out the wiring for the trans but the RJM harness should work for the engine. Maybe they can help with the trans harness.

Then there's always the ODBII route... Donor harness would probably be the best bet.

if he got the 5.8 out of a 96 f250 it wont be mass air at all. it will be speed density efi period.

just run the computer, harness that you have for that motor/tranny. you will need to then run a ford 8.8 rear end so the tranny and computer can get a speed signal to allow proper shifting.

honestly your best bet would be to sell the 96 wiring harness, computer and e4od tranny. get a mustang mass air wiring harness and mass air computer. locate an AOD tranny and never look back. be aware you will also need a 5.8/AOD flexplate from a mid 80's crownvictoria. DO NOT USE the flexplate that is currently on that 5.8 on an AOD tranny otherwise you will fry it.

You can do MAF with a 95 WAY1 computer out of an F150/Bronco with the 5.0/e4od, so no need to look for an AOD if you don't want to, that computer will run the e4od.

I thought the ODBII stuff was all mass air? What did they do, go SD till like 92, the MAF then back to SD in 96?

The OBD-2 stuff is mass air, but only trucks under 8500lb GVWR went to this new system in '96, all HD trucks retained OBD-1 until the new SuperDuty truck was introduced in 1998.

This EFI system needs an electronic speed input to properly operate the transmission, you could use any late model axle with a VSS sensor or an output from the trasnmission or transfercase if so equipped.

only if he had the proper wiring harness. he more then likely doesnt have the right harness to get that to work.
