After getting my intake and tires done on my 1997 F350, I'm looking to do an exhaust system on my 7.3L diesel. From what I understand there are really no emissions testing on the rigs in the Tri-Cities area. Would it be ok to get rid of the cat on my rig or should I keep it?

 

I don't see any reason why not - I removed the cat from my Bronco. Just be prepared to put a cat back on if emissions testing becomes mandatory. I'm not going to hold my breath, because I'm sure it will be a while before it's required. The infrastructure and manpower is just not there yet. However, it's only a matter of time... after all, we do live in what I like to refer to as "Little California."

 

Yeah with all the cuts in state government and the agriculture out here it would probably be a very long time.

 

I read on the state's website that the elected hippies are working on a plan to outsource emissions testing to independent companies. This may mean emissions testing is coming soon to all four corners of the state.

 

Though it may be true, I'm not going to run a cat until I HAVE to. When I had it taken off, it was choking my truck to death, and couldn't afford a high flow. I still can't afford one, but when I have to, I'll get one. Too bad because I also want to do cam/lifters, intake, header, carb, ignition upgrades; all of which will either heavily alter or remove the emissions equipment. Looks like I'll be boxing up and storing that stuff when I do that.

Thing is - on a truck like mine, the original emissions equipment didn't do much along the lines of reducing emissions (at least at the level that vehicles do now), so I figure why bother? Chances are that with the changes I plan on making the engine will run smoother, have more power, possibly get better economy (wish), and probably won't run as fat as it does now, since at idle the exhaust is just full of that unburnt fuel smell. Oh well... when that time comes, hopefully it'll be old enough for Collector's Plates! /rant

Sorry for hijacking this thread, just felt that I had a point to make even if I didn't accomplish that. :/

 

Cut that cat out, install a larger downpipe off the turbo all the way to the tail. Let that truck breath. I have no muffler or cat on mine. Never had a cat installed from day one of purchase back in '02.

 

Think I'll have it deleted but keep it around in my garage just in case.
