Axle noise 4x4 engaged

2009 Ford F250 CC 5.4L, 6spd, FX4, 31,000miles, manual hubs, lever 4x4 shifter

We have had a lot of snow in Arkansas recently and I have been using 4wd. I have noticed a howling noise during off throttle deaccelration while 4wd is engaged. When the tranfer case is in 2wd and hubs are locked, no noise. Only when 4wd is engaged and only at speeds above 40mph. Slight noise on acceleration but mostly on deacceleration.

How noisy is everyone else's front axles? I did a search and some noise seems normal, just trying to figure out when too much noise is a problem. No other ticking our grinding noises.

My noise is increased a little when the front hubs are locked, but it is just noticeable, and I do not have any howling.

I would start by checking and/or replacing the transfer case fluid.

You shouldn't have any "howling" but a slight noticable (not annoying) gear or bearing type noise (slightly more pronounced at no-load). Do as redford recomended by checking but at 30k you shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks. I'll check gear oil level and tranfers case levels Monday when I get to my shop. Not too worried because it doesn't happen in 2wd. I'll keep you updated.

hey ffdemoss.....I was just wondering if you ever found out what the problem of noise was with your truck? Mine has the exact same problem. Mine is fine till you put it in 4wd. then on acceleration at about 15 -25 mph I can hear a slight rub of metal on metal. But after I let off the gas I can hear a distinct grinding type rubbing sound That is much worse than the one on acceleration. My 4x4 still works & 2x4 is fine. but it is a very bothersome sound & cant be good. If anyone knows what this is please help. THANKS.
