Generally how much do machine shops charge to remove a broken bolt from a aluminum cylender head ..I am looking for a rough idea of what I expect to pay. (compleat story in the general engines forum . I posted this in here because I know there are some machine shop guys who frequent this forum)
Thanks Jon
None of the machine shops wanted to mess with mine. One place said they would for $125. I had 4 bolts that needed drilled out. I took them to an exhaust shop and a guy charged me 80 bucks to drill them out. He did a good job. Might want to check there.
Man thats a high price ! i can get reman heads for 200 bucks a piece !!! I hope it is'nt that high as I might bring them to my old high school and do them (it) myself on a drill press!

One time I had an old 73 Comet with a 351 Windosr in it and was changing the manifolds and broke one bolt. Machine guys would not do it because the engine was in the car. So, I went to some good guys who's father values customer service (exhaust shop). They charged me $50 for that one bolt. So, Ratsmoker got a deal!!!
An Aluminum cylinder head---- about a month ago I removed about 5 broken bolts from 3 different (steel) heads.I was at a small machine shop the machinest friend of mine was removing a couple for a dealership mechanech that was 30+ miles away. I have removed a few before but after watching him do it I learned there is an art to it. He would drill it by hand then run the tap down, and would pull out all the thread from the bolt and not recut thread. These were steel heads. I think to have it done right it is worth whatever the man wants to do the job. Good Luck
I drilled 5 exaughst bolts out of my heads when I put in my motor. I use a cobalt drill bit, steady hand and good aim. Drill a hole slightly smaller than the bolt and tap the old threads right out...
Well I dropped off the heads today , and the employee said that he would have to charge by the hour to remove the broken bolt . I didnt ask how much that was but hopfully it is fair ,as the pressure check and resurfacing comes to 140 bucks which I didnt think was bad ( for two heads I might add) I'll keep you guys posted
