Really Bad way to start the weekend..........

So, I wear my safety glasses at work pretty much all day long......... Today, about 10 minutes before I am ready to leave one of the other guys grabs me to help him take a few quick measurements for laying out a new piece of equipment in our new addition. Fast forward 5 minutes and I am on the floor marking out a dimension with my safety glasses at my desk, he has the tape measure strung out about 12 feet when he decides to let it reel back in without slowing it down... we all know what that does right? Well, the tape gets all but two feet reeled back in when it snaps back around his back and the end of the tape nails me directly in the eyeball..... One trip to the eye doctor later and I look like this. I guess a decent size chunk of my eye is stuck to the end of his tape.. worst part is my eye is taped shut and it is driving me nuts that I cant open it!!! Try driving home froim the eye doctor with one eye taped shut, you have no depth perception, typing and reading is tough too, so forgive any errors.. Anyway, I shouldnt have any vision damage and my buddy that did it to me feels like **** about it. Just one of those deals I guess...

Good to hear they say it'll heal up okay.
PS: As I typed this, I just picked a piece of copper wire out of my cheek from the roofing nails I've been shooting all day. Maybe I should take a hint from this...

I had a job for 20 years where they made safety glasses mandatory. First year was a real pain to adjust too, after that though, I always wear safety glasses ANYTIME I'm working on anything, and it has saved me several times. I found out that the trick is to find the type of glasses you like the best then buy at least 6 pair. Once they start to get scratched, just toss them out. Other may razz you, but it beats a trip to the ER. And safety glasses are always cheaper than a real emergency.

Yeah what ever happened to that? Seems like I remember them costing more in bulk than you could pay for one at Slowes.

I have had chunks fly into my eye from grinding, a wire from a wire wheel, and a chunk from the metal devil saw. I finally learned to wear them all the time, got tired of having my eye clamped open while watching a surgical dremel tool drill the rust out of my eyeball. NOT FUN ANYMORE!

i've been pretty lucky eventhough safety glasses are an afterthought for me most of the time. i always wear them when required to on a job, but rarely ever at home until something gets in my eye. really need to get in the habit of wearing them when i'm in teh garage.

fun story, my dad almost lost an eye in an mri machine because he had chunks of metal stuck in his eye from a previous injury. he lucked out though.

The ultimate welder's jig- getting hit with spatter under the hood on or inside the eyelid. I double bag under the hood, shade 5 glasses work great with shade 8-10 autodarkening for heavy stick work/ when you're getting flashed by the guy in the next cell everytime you lift the hood.

i think it is written somewhere in the welders handbook that you can't call yourself a real welder until you can say you got splatter burn on the eye or eyelid while wearing a full face-shield.

and show the scars to prove it.
