Well the higher ratio you go, the less R.P.M.'s the motor turns, and thus better fuel mileage. 4.10 is low. If i had the notion to look at gears, 3.55 front and back.
Im told my my stock 2010 4.0 4x4 I has 373s and I think its to tall but I drive things kinda hard. I get about 20 mpg about 75 mph and maybe, maybe 15 around town if I drive cool
i prefer the 3.73 ratio myself. but thats with stock tires, which on my truck are 235-75-15. if i were to have 31-10.50's id want 4.10's bigger tires will give you more rolling resistance and use more fuel. gearing is a compromise, too high a gear (say for example 3.08) wont let the engine be at the right rpm at cruising speed and will be lugging, using more fuel and being hard on the engine, as well as being a pain to drive if it has a manual trans-will stall easier. too low a gear (for example 4.56) will be easy to drive from a standing start without stalling, but the engine will be roaring away at highway speed, turning way more rpms then needed and burning excess fuel. tire size and useage (commuter, work truck, trailer towing) will determine your optomine gear ratio. ive found 3.73's with stock 29" tires able to do what i need and still be effiecnt enough to drive everyday. theres time when deeper gears would be nice, but when i dont need them id be useing more fuel. and with 2 differentials on my 4wd, id be looking at 700-900 to change to a differnt gear ratio. that would buy alot of fuel in itself.
