Exhaust for 74 ranger

hello... i have an 1974 Ford Ranger XLT f-100 that has NO exhaust or lack there of. i have hooker comp headers long tube bolted straight to glasspacks. lol wwwaaayyy tttooo lloouuudddd! i need an exhaust system header back. car info: 302, auto, 2wd, single cab/6.9bed.

looking for 2.5 or larger with "H" or "X" pipe (not important) and i would like to dump them out in front of rear wheels (but i can always do it after winter).

i could fab something up but i needed it asap and i dont want to work in the cold right now. wanted something already made. thanks. fern.

you can see the headers there... its a 302

So go get one built? I would seriously doubt you can buy a bolt on system, and even if you could, a custom built would probably cost you less.

Khan... looks like your right. all i find online is just do it yourself pipe system. like a universal kit. i just hate paying someone to do something i know and can do you know. but i def dont want to work under this snow or cold. and my garage is full with other cars. its going to have to come down to that i am afraid.

you're not gonna want anything bigger than 2.5" for that engine if you're doing true dual.

this is the only thing i can find. it's for a 75+ but i doubt anything changed between 74 and 75 in these trucks

and this kit comes with headers. i got a 2.5" exhaust quoted for my 75 f100 4x4 a few days a go (header back true dual) for $70+s/h. That's pretty good if you ask me.

Thanks NW 150.. i already had seen this but not too much what i was looking for. its 2&1/4 piping. i wanted at least a 2.5. as far as it going bigger and i already have headers. i was going to take them off and paint them.

i was speaking with a gentlemen last night that is a big ford head and he said the same thing. he would go with a 2&1/4 or not more then 2.5"... that the power span of that truck isnt going to match the 3" of exhaust i put on it. so i think i was just going to put a exhaust system together piece by piece. and make this thread a How-To instead. i really wanted something bolt up so i can be quick about it but it doesn't seem like its going to happen. thanks for the advice either way.

yea i looked for a pre made header back for my truck but the only one i could find was also 2.25" for 2wd. I'm in the debate now between 2.5" or 3" now because i'm using flowmaster 40s on my 390. I'm not sure if the 3" would help with those mufflers or loose low end.

so just an update... i bought from JEGS 2 flowmaster mufflers super44's with center (2.5) inlet and center (2.5) outlet. and collector pipe kit. (comes with flange and gasket with bolts.) i didnt go with the ball and socket bec it would have been a little more work and a little more expensive. this is a cheap project i was going for but dont right. so... what i am doing today is buying all the piping i need (straight 2.5 pipe sections) 2 pieces of 10 feet. and taking it to my friend who does custom exhaust. he has a pipe bender that he is going to help me out with. i decided to go with 2.5 bec its not tooo small or tooo big. 3" is way too much for my 302. and 2&1/4 is stock (i though it was too drastic to go from 3" headers to 2&1/4 piping.)

plan is the same as before. i am going to have them dump out infront of the rear wheels at an angle. lets see how it comes out. i did how ever want to buy some exhaust dumps or (cutoffs) but wasnt in my budget. i do like the sound of open headers...

okay here is an update on my exhaust system... poor mans style.

this is the pipe that was with the header mufflers... we cut the actual "muffler" off and left the 3" pipe that went up and over the cross frame.

then we welded a 3" dump that my mechanic had laying around (got it for free)!! you can see the reducers welded after the dumps.. then welded to the intake side of the muffler

then comes the 44 series muffler from Flowmaster i had bought before. pipe is bent at a 45 degrees and tilted downward out.

lands right in front of the rear wheel which i wanted to do. love that look.

here is pictures of the outcome. love the place it landed. now we have to cut it to the body line bec it sticks out too far.

driver side was done then i left so no pictures of pass side. but same thing.

we used new gasket and bolts for the old 3" pipe that we left over the cross rail. then just welded the reducers from the 3" dump to the 2.5 inlet side of the muffler.

It's cool no worries. So i didn't take time to go back and read everything but what size pipes are you running?

And yea i want to hear how this thing sound with the 44s, should be interesting.

originally i was going to bolt up collector pipes to the headers.. (3" to 2.5") then just run the whole system using 2.5 piping. but i went a different way. i left the 3" pipe that was bolted up to the headers because they had a curve already. they go up and over the cross member. then put the dumps welded to that pipe.

couple factors i took into mind.
1) i got 3" dumps for free so i wanted to install it since i was at it.
2) would have to use more pipe and more bending.

look up and look at the pipe that goes up and over the cross member thats what i left on from the original "header mufflers" then welded the collector pipe after the dumps.
