Hey guys, I'm working on an '89 F150, 4 speed manual w/overdrive, 4wd, 5.0 motor. So my problem is when driving usually in 4th or 5th (overdrive) when I let off the gas and am coasting in gear then trans seems to jump out of gear part way. It sounds like a buzzing almost like when you "bump" a gear when the clutch is not depressed. Another part of the problem or possibly another problem altogether is that my 4wd won't stay engaged when I am driving its like the trans totally shifts into neutral but when I shift the 4wd shifter back to 2wd it goes back into gear. Also it wont shift into 4wd low. The only thing that I can think of is that something in the transfer case is worn. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Jumping out of gear could be shift forks. Is this the Mazda trans or the ZF? Mazda transmissions do eat shift forks, and have some oil leak issues that can lead to low fluid and the resultant problems.
As for why it won't stay in 4wd--is there a linkage adjustment? Wear in the shifter & linkage?
I'm not sure what kind of trans it is, I'll do some checking. As for the 4wd issues, the linkage looks fine its very simple and doesnt seem to be worn, the shifter doesnt move when it jumps out of 4wd. Do you have any idea what a trans shop would charge to fix the shift forks? I am under no illusion that I can successfully work on my own trans without help.
edit- There is no linkage adjustment that I can see for the 4wd. What would the symptoms of low trans fluid be?
